Brie Larson will star in a new Netflix spy thriller titled The Agent and may even direct the film. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Marvel star will be teaming up with the world’s biggest streaming platform for what certainly sounds like the beginning of a potential franchise. In all likelihood, this is the James Bond-style thriller that we previously reported Brie Larson was in talks with Netflix for, finally coming to fruition.
The Agent will star Brie Larson as a high-level CIA agent who is tasked with a dangerous mission to take down an international criminal organization, which sounds very James Bond and also remarkably generic (the title probably does not help). It also seems that in the current absence of an actual 007 (since Daniel Craig’s 2021 swan song No Time to Die), studios are looking to fill the vacuum left by the super spy with new covert-ops characters.
In particular, Netflix seems to be doubling down on its attempts to create its own spy thriller, with Brie Larson and The Agent next up to bat. Last year, the streaming platform brought in the Russo Brothers for the much-promoted franchise starter The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling as the eponymous CIA assassin, Chris Evans as his sociopathic, mustachioed nemesis, and Ana de Armas; the film cost a reported $200 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever produced by Netflix.
It is unknown whether Netflix will be putting the same kind of production values behind Brie Larson and The Agent, though it seems like there is a strong possibility that the Captain Marvel actress will be put in the director’s chair for the project. Larson’s 2017 directional debut, Unicorn Store, was also produced through Netflix, which shows that the company probably has some faith in her in that regard. The film co-starred her Marvel compatriot Samuel L. Jackson, Joan Cusack, and Bradley Whitford, and received largely decent reviews.
Certainly, a 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes does not seem to have soured Netflix on Brie Larson, who, to be fair, is an Academy Award winner and attached to some of the biggest franchises in the world. It will remain to be seen whether Larson can anchor an action film on her own, but Netflix seems willing to take that chance.
Brie Larson will soon be appearing in The Marvels, which will team her up with Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel; the Nia DaCosta film is one of the more eagerly anticipated new MCU projects, at least in part to see if it can overcome the so-called superhero fatigue that increasingly is plaguing Marvel Studios. Maybe if the studio can get Brie Larson to make more than the one facial expression, it can do a little better than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She will also be starring in Fast X, so maybe she can expand the range a little bit there too.
