Spider-Man Spinoff El Muerto Is Looking Like It’s Getting Canceled
Bad Bunny, who stars in Sony's Spider-Man spin-off, El Meurto, says that while the movie hasn't officially been canceled yet, production has been continuously delayed.
It may seem like the MCU is the only game in town when it comes to movies and shows based on Marvel comic book characters, but Sony’s got a chunk of that action as well. In fact, Sony has its own “Sony Spider-Man Universe” (SSU for short) that is spinning out spin-offs quicker than a real spider can spin a web. Unfortunately, one of these spin-offs, El Muerto, may have just been canceled, according to ComicBook.com.
El Muerto was set to star singer-turned-actor Bad Bunny as the titular character, but he recently gave fans an unwelcome update. The film was scheduled to be released in January 2024, but Bad Bunny says that production hasn’t even started. His publicist then went on to say that the movie was “at a standstill,” a statement which he later took back and changed to “in development.”
While El Muerto may still get made eventually, it almost certainly won’t be released in January of next year. By this point, eight months before the release date, a film should have at least completed most of its principal photography stage, but that hasn’t even begun. What is causing these production delays is not known at this time, but Spider-Man fans will just have to cross their fingers and hope that it is something that can be overcome.
One of the other potential issues with El Muerto could be that the character only appeared in three comic books, so not many people know who this character even is. According to Marvel Comics’ website, El Muerto is a Luchador (Mexican wrestler) whose goal is to take down El Dorado, a wrestling god who killed his father. He wants to earn the right to wear his family’s legendary Luchador mask by avenging his father and proving his worth.
Aside from the El Muerto movie, some of Sony’s other SSU projects are still chugging along, even if some, like Madame Web, which stars Dakota Johnson, Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, and other famous faces, have been rescheduled numerous times. That film in particular was first slated for release on July 7, 2023. Then the release date was pushed back to October 6, 2023. As of now, it is set to be released on February 16, 2024, but we’ll see how that goes.
Kraven the Hunter, another film set in the SSU, will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe (again, among several other big names) and will reportedly debut in October 2023. At the moment, though, Crowe says that he is scheduled to film some reshoots for the movie, so we will see if that changes the release date of that movie as well!
As for the fate of El Muerto, nothing has been written in stone yet. But the fact that filming hasn’t even begun on a movie that is supposed to be released in less than a year is definitely not a good sign, so we will just have to wait and hope for the best for Bad Bunny and the rest of the crew at Sony.
