Harrison Ford Sci-Fi Thriller Is Topping The Streaming Charts
Harrison Ford's sci-fi thriller Ender's Game is streaming at #2 on HBO.
Harrison Ford audiences gearing up to see the star return to one of his most celebrated roles as Indiana Jones in the franchise’s fifth installment, The Dial of Destiny, can join a slew of fans running to HBO Max to catch his 2013 sci-fi flick, Ender’s Game, where FlixPatrol reports the movie is currently holding down the #2 position on the streamer. While it may have been a bust at the box office, on paper, the title seemed like it would be a winner as it was an adaptation of a fan-favorite novel and boasted an all-star line-up.
Returning to his space roots, Star Wars actor Harrison Ford leads in Ender’s Game as Col. Hyrum Graff, a military leader tasked with finding the next Mazer (champion) to pull mankind to a victory against an inevitable alien attack. Of all his recruits, one known as Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) stands out and quickly rises to the top of his class. With the celebrated Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley) by his side, Ender is put on a training fast track to live up to his fullest potential and become the leader he was destined to be.
Along with Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Asa Butterfield, the Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) directed and penned feature also starred Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin. Although other action-centered books like the Jack Reacher series have made for excellent page-to-screen crossovers, the same can’t be said for this 2013 adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 novel of the same name. While the film proved to be a miss with fans and critics, landing only 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, the book managed to nab some celebratory acclaim.
Crashing and burning at the box office, Ender’s Game only managed to bring in a worldwide total of $125.5 million against its $115 million budget. Although plans for a sequel were already in the works when the first film premiered, the feature’s staggering defeat at the box office quickly blew any hope for a follow-up out of the water. For Harrison Ford, the film comes in at the actor’s 23rd spot on his Rotten Tomatoes rating out of a total of 41 titles that he’s appeared in over his career.
Ender’s Game was preceded in Harrison Ford’s filmography by Paranoia, which just so happens to be his 40th least-loved movie on Rotten Tomatoes, only managing to receive a measly 7%. Luckily for him, his career would soon launch back to the iconic place it deserved as just two years following Ender’s Game, in 2015, he would return to his beloved role of Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While this would sadly be his final (for now) run as the blaster-slingin’ character, it gave him the boost that he needed to get back into the swing of things, landing several other major titles in the following years.
He would then return to another fan-favorite role in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, where he appeared opposite Ryan Gosling in a sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi flick from the ‘80s. The last few years have also been great for the Hollywood icon as Harrison Ford’s voice was heard in the anticipated animated follow-up film The Secret Life of Pets 2 and the leading role in the gritty live-action take on the classic novel, The Call of the Wild.
Sticking to his work in franchises, audiences are on the edge of their seats waiting for summer to arrive to tag along with one of Harrison Ford’s most beloved characters: Indiana Jones. A long-time coming, the fifth film will see Indy going blow to blow with Nazis and finding more hidden archeological wonders. Joining Ford to reprise his role as Sallah will be John Rhys-Davies, with the cast also including big names like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, and Mads Mikkelsen.
Although his time in Star Wars may have come to an end, things are just beginning to heat up for Harrison Ford in another beloved franchise as Marvel fans are preparing for his MCU arrival. The actor will be taking on the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, aka Red Hulk, in both Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts, which are slated to arrive in 2024. From there, who knows where we’ll spot the long-time Hollywood star next.
