Star Trek Announces Premiere Dates And Renewals, Which Shows Got Canceled?
Paramount announces the premiere date of Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds along with the release windows for new seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.
In spite of Discovery getting only one more season and Picard concluding in less than a month, on Tuesday, Paramount announced the premiere date for Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+ — Thursday, June 15. While it stopped short of precise dates, it also gave release windows for Season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks (Late Summer) and Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy (Winter). The announcement also confirmed Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a third season, and Lower Decks has likewise been renewed for Season 5.
This news arrives just as some corners of the fandom are starting to worry about the future of Star Trek. With no theatrical releases on the horizon, no new series announced, and Discovery ending with Season 5, some have been questioning whether or not Alex Kurtzman has been blowing smoke when it comes to future plans. Now we know for sure at the very least new seasons of all three of the remaining Trek series will stream this year, and that at least two of those three shows have even more seasons on the way.
It’s likely we can expect even more big Star Trek news to drop very soon. Next Wednesday, April 5, marks First Contact Day — the fictional holiday noted for the Vulcans making first contact with humanity. There’s a decent chance we could get our first teaser for Strange New Worlds‘ second season that day and possibly some announcements for new projects.
In particular, there are three potential projects that fans will no doubt be hoping to hear about. There’s Star Trek: Legacy, a series proposed by Picard showrunner Terry Matalas that would combine older cast members from TNG with younger heroes introduced in Picard. There’s the long-brewing Star Trek: Section 31, which may or may not star Michelle Yeoh, who is much more in demand now than she was when she first joined the cast of Discovery.
Then there is the series there has been plenty of chatter about, but not enough yet to rise above rumor: a Picard-like series that would focus on Kate Mulgrew’s Kathryn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager fame. Mulgrew has been vocal about her interest in the idea, and it’s beginning to feel more like not if but when.
The announcement for Star Trek: Prodigy is notably missing any word on a Season 3 renewal, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been cancelled. Prodigy‘s first season concluded later than the previous seasons of the other shows and was, in fact, the last series in the franchise to air new episodes before Season 3 of Picard. So it could be that decisions were naturally made on the other series before Prodigy.
