See Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Turn Spock Into A Wizard
A deleted scene from the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds DVD shows Spock as a Wizard in a Star Trek fairy tale episode.
Usually, when a fan hears the words “space wizard,” they think of Star Wars, but that’s about to change. A new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds deleted scene was posted to YouTube recently. The short clip shows a character addressing a staff-wielding Spock as a “wizard.”
The scene is part of the extras included with the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Blu-ray steel book. The season 1 steel book arrives in stores on March 21, with a 4K UHD release to follow in May. Season 2 of the new Star Trek series will premiere on Paramount+ later this year.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows the first crew of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), led by Captain Christopher Pike, as they explore the galaxy a decade before the original series. The series stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, and Ethan Peck as the wizard himself, Spock.
The above clip comes from the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode “The Elysian Kingdom,” the eigth episode of the series’ first season. The episode featured the crew being trapped in a fairy tale hence Spock’s wizardly attire.
Spock’s role in the fairy tale is that of Pollux, a dark sorcerer serving (what else) an evil Queen. Pollux allowed Ethan Peck to portray Spock as a villain rather than the cold, logical Vulcan we’re all used to. A villain that looks like Severus Snape and Gandalf raised him.
Wizard Spock looks like he climbed out of Lord of the Rings and decided to hide in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds so the Hobbits would stop bugging him. The long-haired Pollux clad in robes and carrying a staff wouldn’t look out of place in a Harry Potter movie either.
It’s all part of creators Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman’s efforts to make Star Trek: Strange New Worlds lighthearted and fun like the original ’60s series. Star Trek: The Original Series was adept at balancing thoughtful sci-fi classics like “City on the Edge of Forever” with sillier episodes. Episodes like “The Way to Eden,” where singing space hippies take over the Enterprise, or “The Trouble With Tribbles,” where little balls of floof multiply and fill the entire ship.
Episodes like “The Elysian Kingdom” prove that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s hard to strike the perfect balance between serious science fiction and ridiculous space opera, but Strange New Worlds is doing a good job so far. Gene Roddenberry would be proud.
The new steel book will contain over 90 minutes of special features, including exclusive cast and crew interviews, a gag reel, and deleted scenes like the one above. Paramount Home Entertainment will also be hosting a 21+ trivia night to celebrate the home release of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will take place on Friday, March 24, at Hollywood’s Scum and Villainy Cantina.
While Star Trek fans were bummed recently when they learned that Discovery would end after its fifth season, the Strange New Worlds Blu-ray should go a long way toward lifting their spirits. Who can be sad when Wizard Spock exists?
