Sam Raimi Back For A New Evil Dead Movie?
Sam Raimi claimed in a recent Reddit AMA that he's willing to come back to not only Evil Dead, but also Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.
Fans of Sam Raimi’s work, such as the Evil Dead or Spider-man films, may have found themselves cheering in their seats when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed widespread audiences that the filmmaker still has his classic blend of camp and horror. However, Raimi hasn’t helmed an Evil Dead installment since 1992’s Army of Darkness, starring frequent collaborator Bruce Campbell; the veteran filmmaker has stated in a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit that he would be open to exploring the franchise again in the future.
While responding to a fan inquiring about the likelihood of another Evil Dead film, Raimi stated, “I would return to direct or write for any of those franchises if I could. I loved my experiences on all sets and have a great relationship with my partners on Evil Dead, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange 2. Each could be a very exciting experience for me creatively.”
The AMA was held in collaboration with the writer/director duo behind 65, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Sam Raimi produced the thrilling film, which sees Adam Driver and a team of time-traveling soldiers taking on dinosaurs in the Cretaceous period after their ship crashes on a prehistoric earth. The director duo teamed with Sam Raimi to promote hype for the film’s release and answer fan questions, prompting the Evil Dead query, sparking a host of fan speculation about Raimi’s return to the hit horror franchise.
With Spider-man: No Way Home bringing Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man into the MCU, many fans hoped to see Sam Raimi unite with his former muse, sparking a nostalgia-fueled wave of jokes and memes on the internet. Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy spawned a subreddit of its own titled r/Raimimemes. Of course, old-school fans of the director know him for his horror work first and foremost, leaving a huge fan reception wide open for Sam Raimi’s return to the Evil Dead franchise.
Sam Raimi has not written or directed either of the most recent Spider-man or Evil Dead installments to hit the screen, but he has not strayed far from the franchises. Raimi acted as a producer on both 2013’s The Evil Dead remake, as well as the upcoming Alyssa Sutherland-led Evil Dead Rise film which is set to hit theaters this April. Raimi also consulted with Marvel to use characters returning from his original Spider-Man films, such as Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osbourne and Alfred Molina’s Otto Octavius.
While continuing to answer questions about 65 and other upcoming projects, Sam Raimi maintained that he would be more than happy to return to helm another Evil Dead film while referencing the upcoming Evil Dead Rise. Raimi produced the film, hoping to return the franchise to its straightforward horror roots in place of the largely campy and comedic tone the films have grown into. Written and directed by Ghost Train filmmaker Lee Cronin, the film is set to be released on HBO Max after premiering at film festivals such as South by Southwest.
A Sam Raimi-led Evil Dead film would certainly garner fan attention. As previously mentioned, the iconic horror director has a dedicated fanbase of online users who would flock to the theaters to see any film with his name attached, all while creating a myriad of free press through memes and online discourse.
