Sofia Vergara looks like a bombshell in her latest Instagram post. Recently, the actress posted a sexy video running in slow motion. Now she takes a selfie in the mirror with her (faux) snakeskin-covered phone as she wears a black, off-the-shoulder dress with feathery accents and a plunging neckline that shows off her ample cleavage. She finishes off the look with raspberry red lipstick, black eyeliner, and a thick, shimmery silver bracelet and ring.
According to IMDb, the actress we know as Sofia Vergara was born Sofia Margarita Vergara Vergara (yes, two Vergaras) in Barranquilla, Colombia to a homemaker and a cattle rancher in 1972. Interestingly, the actress we all know as a bold brunette was actually born blonde, but when she started trying out for films, filmmakers and television execs “didn’t know where to put [her]” because she had a thick Colombian accent and was “voluptuous,” but didn’t look like the accepted definition of a Latina woman on screen at the time (which, apparently, was Salma Hayek). So, she dyed her hair and the roles started rolling in.
If you have watched Modern Family, you will have heard many references to how rough Sofia Vergara’s character of Gloria had it growing up in Colombia. In real life, the actress may have had it a bit better, having studied at a private bilingual school called Marymount School Barranquilla. Still, though, the show’s not-actually-so-funny jokes about Colombia’s crime rate were not so far-fetched: in real life, Sofia Vergara’s older brother died during an attempt to kidnap him in 1998.
This event led Sofia Vergara to bring her son, her mother, and her sister with her and move to the United States.
By this time, though, Sofia Vergara was already a celebrity in Colombia. Her career in films and television shows was kicked off by a photographer who discovered her while she was walking on the beach. This encounter led to numerous modeling offers and chances to be on television.
When she was just 17 years old, she starred in a Pepsi commercial that aired in Latin America. After that, she attended the Creative Workshops School of Acting, which was where Gloria Estefan also got her start.
Sofia Vergara acted in numerous films and shows here and there before getting her big break with Modern Family. In 2012, she was the highest-earning woman on American television. According to Reuters, she earned $19 million that year, earning her the top spot on Forbes’ annual list, beating out even Kim Kardashian, who earned a paltry $18 million that year.
The next year, Sofia Vergara earned another kind of honor: she came in number 12 on the list of men’s “most desirable women” in Ask magazine This may not sound like too big of a deal, but for Vergara, who was self-conscious about her figure when she was a young girl, it was really saying something. When she was a child (presumably before her now-famous bosoms showed up), she would even wear two pairs of pants to make herself look less skinny and more shapely.
Now, though, her enviable figure is one of the reasons Sofia Vergara is so famous – behind her acting talent and humor, of course.
