Sydney Sweeney Cast As Spider-Woman In Madame Web Movie
Sydney Sweeney will play Spider-Woman in the upcoming Madame Web film.
As one of the hottest titles to be making its way out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe/Sony Pictures vault, Madame Web has faced its fair share of speculation and rumors over the last several months. While we’ve known for a while that Fifty Shades of Grey franchise star Dakota Johnson would be weaving the role of the titular superhero, it’s been up in the air who other cast mates, including Adam Scott, Sydney Sweeney, and Emma Roberts will be playing. Well, one of those castings has been seemingly answered by industry insider Jeff Sneider who, on his podcast, The Hot Mic, shared the news that Sydney Sweeney will appear in the upcoming flick as Spider-Woman.
While this report hasn’t been confirmed by the studio, with The Cosmic Circus first bringing the claim forward in August 2022, it’s now almost a sure thing with Sneider and his co-host John Rocha breaking things down for audiences during a recent episode. From what Sneider shared about the news he’s heard from his boots on the ground, Sydney Sweeney will be playing Julia Carpenter, aka “the second” Spider-Woman. While this answers one burning question, it still leaves the undisclosed roles of Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced, Mike Epps, Tahar Rahim, and Zosia Mamet up for debate.
As for Sydney Sweeney’s take on Julia Carpenter aka Spider-Woman, the character was first introduced in 1984’s breakthrough Secret Wars comic. The subject of some bizarre DNA testing that included spiders and plants, Carpenter came to inherit some similar abilities as our beloved neighborhood-friendly Spider-Man. With the character’s original ties to Secret Wars, we presume that this won’t be Sweeney’s only appearance in upcoming Marvel projects.
While not much has been released surrounding the plot for Madame Web, we know that the film is in good hands with S.J. Clarkson (Toast, Dexter, Ugly Betty) standing at the helm. In a cinematic world dominated by male superheroes, a film centered around not just Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web, but Sydney Sweeney’s Spider-Woman is an exciting shift from the typical Marvel fare. Prior to this project, the only other title to solely focus on a female hero was 2019’s Brie Larson-led feature Captain Marvel.
As for Sydney Sweeney, beyond the role of Spider-Woman, The White Lotus and Euphoria actress has her hands full juggling a multitude of titles. She and the rest of the cast and crew of Tony Tost’s crime thriller Americana are preparing for the film to debut at SXSW with the actress set to appear in Michael Mohan’s horror feature, Immaculate, which is due out after Madame Web. And then there’s Sweeney’s hopeful return to Sam Levinson’s dark teenage drama Euphoria which has faced a multitude of setbacks for its yet-to-be-revealed third season return to HBO.
With this latest major break in Madame Web news, it’s only a matter of time for more details to make their way out of the tangled web and onto the world wide web. With her career exploding in recent years, we’re beyond certain that Sydney Sweeney will deliver in the role of Spider-Woman, and we’re excited to see her make her MCU debut. Currently, the film is set for release on February 16, 2024.
