Super Mario Fans Are Extremely Happy After New Announcement For The Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is being released in theaters on April 5, two days earlier than previously anticipated.
Great news for Super Mario Bros. fans, the new movie will be released to theaters even sooner than expected. Previously scheduled to release on Friday, April 7, fans can now watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters two days earlier, starting April 5, according to Variety. The feature film by Universal and Illumination, starring Chris Pratt as the titular character, will be the first Super Mario Bros. animated movie adaptation.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is based on the Super Mario Bros. games that have been loved by children (and adults) for generations. Although this isn’t the first movie adaptation (there was a pretty terrible live-action film released in 1993 that received a 29 percent from both fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes), it is the first animated movie featuring Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser, and all the other fan-favorite citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom.
The new Super Mario movie will bring audiences on a journey through the Mushroom Kingdom as they join Mario, a plumber from Brooklyn, as he attempts to find and save his brother, Luigi, from a ruthless Koopa named Bowser. Along the way, Mario will meet Princess Peach and Toad, the anthropomorphic mushroom, who will help him with his mission.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be widely released across the United States on April 5 and will also appear in theaters in more than 60 international markets, including China, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, the U.K., and Ireland. Additionally, the film will have a limited release in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. The film won’t be released in Japan until April 28, so the movie can come out at the same time as the Golden Week Holidays.
The change of The Super Mario Bros. Movie release date isn’t the first time Universal and Illumination have switched up the film’s premiere. The original plan was for the movie to hit theaters on December 21, 2022, just over a year after it was first announced in September 2021. Unfortunately for eager fans, the film was pushed back by four months to its now official release date in April.
Chris Pratt voices the titular character of Mario, the Brooklyn plumber and one-half of the Super Mario Bros. featured in the movie. His brother Luigi is voiced by Charlie Day. Anya Taylor-Joy voices Mario’s Nintendo-confirmed girlfriend, Princess Peach (although we’re not yet sure if the movie will follow this same dynamic).
The villain of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is, of course, Bowser, who is voiced by Jack Black. Seth Rogan voices the infamous Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key voices Toad, and Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Kevin Michael Richardson also contributed their voices to the classic Nintendo characters, Cranky Kong, Spike, and Kamek.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was written by Matthew Fogel, who is known for penning Minions: Rise of Gru (2022) and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019). The film was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
