Marvel’s Weirdest Villain Coming Back For Another Movie?
Corey Stoll, the actor behind MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, said he would love to return for another Marvel movie.
Corey Stoll would be up for playing MODOK again if they’ll have him. The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star recently told ScreenRant, “I am down to continue playing M.O.D.O.K. That would be so much fun,” when asked if he would ever return to the role. Does this mean the big floating head with the little dangly legs will make another appearance in the MCU?
Not necessarily. When it comes to another MODOK appearance, Stoll admits, “Your guess is as good as mine? I have no inside knowledge on that one.” The actor’s comments indicate Marvel has no current plans to bring the freakish villain back to the big screen any time soon. Plus, he’s dead.
Not that death means anything in comic book movies. The very existence of the MCU version of MODOK proves that. Unlike the comics, the movie MODOK is no longer the result of evil experiments done by A.I.M. but a mutated version of Darren Cross, AKA Yellowjacket, from the first Ant-Man. Cross seemingly met his demise at the end of the first Ant-Man movie, only to show up two sequels later as MODOK.
MODOK stands for Mechanized Organism Designed Only For Killing and, in his comic book incarnation, has long been a thorn in the side of several of Marvel’s superheroes. The character was originally conceived as MODOC–Mechanized Organism Designed Only For Computing–before an experiment went awry and the C for Computing became a K for Killing. The MCU’s MODOK is very different, being a deformed Cross who was mutated by his malfunctioning suit and saved by Jonathon Majors’ Kang the Conquerer.
Despite having different origins, the two versions of MODOK share the same appearance, an oversized head, and shrunken limbs supported by a floating mechanical armor/chair hybrid. The character has gained some popularity in recent years thanks to a stop-motion animated series on Hulu starring Patton Oswalt. The Hulu series took a comedic approach to the character and featured MODOK juggling typical sitcom problems with his family while trying to take over the world.
If it was up to Corey Stoll, the next MODOK project would be a prequel to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Qauntumania showing the villain’s rise as Kang’s loyal henchman. The actor would like to see the character’s evil side explored more. “It would be really interesting to see the more vicious, menacing side of him,” Stoll told ScreenRant.
The overall theme of the MCU’s Phase Four was the existence of a multiverse containing infinite variants of every character. This means that there are infinite MODOKs out there just waiting to drag their gargantuan craniums into the main MCU timeline. Personally, this writer would love to see a MODOK dimension with Playstation 2 cutscene versions of all the Avengers. Just imagine how funny it would be to see MODOK Thor arguing with MODOK Loki.
Ultimately, the return of MODOK depends on the fans. If there is an overwhelmingly positive response to the character once Ant-Man 3 reaches a larger audience through streaming, then it’s a safe bet MODOK will return in some capacity.
