The Suicide Squad Star Confirmed To Return In The New DC Universe
While wishing The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker star Steve Agee a happy birthday, James Gunn shared that fans will see him sooner than they expect.
In every story, there are the main characters and then characters that exist just in supporting roles, whether it’s the pilot that drops off the hero or the tech workers trying to trace a signal; these side characters cans sometimes be just as memorable as the leads. One example is The Suicide Squad’s support team, background side characters that rise up in the climax and save the Squad from their internal bombs. Steve Agee’s computer tech, John Economos, went on to co-star in Peacemaker and now, according to DC Universe Co-CEO James Gunn, will be appearing again very soon.
In wishing a happy birthday to Steve Agee (he’s 54 and looking great!), James Gunn refers to the comedian as a great friend and collaborator. The pair have worked together multiple times, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which again features Agee as a memorable side character. This time, the New Girl star played Gef, one of Taserface’s Ravagers.
With that information, it would make sense to assume that James Gunn is referring to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Steve Agee’s next appearance, except Gef was brutally murdered by Michael Rooker’s Yondua during an amazing escape sequence featuring one arrow. If he returns, it will be interesting how it’s explained, even if it’s explained, though he could be a different character given the amount of makeup covering his face in the MCU.
It’s more likely that just as James Gunn’s wife, Jennifer Holland, made a brief cameo in Black Adam as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee will surface in one of the DC Universe films coming out before Peacemaker’s second season. In a tweet, Gunn explained to a fan’s question that season two would have to wait for both Superman Legacy and the unnamed Amanda Waller project with Viola Davis. The latter is also a candidate for John Economos to pop up as he has in the last two Suicide Squad projects.
Though the where and when of his next appearance is up in the air, it will happen. If you had Steve Agee outlasting Henry Cavill in the DC Universe on your bingo card, you’re either a liar or a huge fan of Hollywood character actors. It takes talent to make an impact when only on screen for a few seconds at a time, which is why Economos greatly expanded role in Peacemaker helped make him a fan favorite.
The John Cena-led HBO Max series also starred Freddie stroma as Vigilante, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, and Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s father, August Smith. All of the stars, and many of the guest stars, can also be seen in the famous opening credits sequence of Peacemaker. Through sheer coincidence, the dance number was choreographed by Alan Tudyk’s wife, Charissa Lee-Barton, somehow getting one of Hollywood’s most famous character actors involved in the series.
Steve Agee may have had fun celebrating his birthday, but it sure sounds like he’ll soon be back on the DC Universe sets, and when he does, he’ll have appeared in just as many DC Universe properties as Ben Affleck’s Batman. With over 154 credits to his name (according to IMDB), the least likely DCU star is well on his way to yet another standout performance.
