Tom Hiddleston Returning To His Best Role And It Isn’t Loki
Tom Hiddleston's award-winning espiionage series The Night Manager is getting a second season after the first aired in 2016.
It’s easy to forget that Tom Hiddleston was an accomplished actor before his breakthrough role as Loki in the MCU, and even after ascending to stardom, he can still be found in other projects. Deadline reports that the best of those other shows is finally, seven years later, getting a second season. The Night Manager, a British drama about a hotel night manager recruited to infiltrate an Egyptian illegal arms trader’s inner circle, is finally returning.
Tom Hiddleston played Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier, now the night manager of the Nefertiti Hotel in Cairo, who happens to be romantically involved with Sophie (Aurie Atika), mistress to notorious smuggler Richard “Dicky” Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie). Soon after Pine passes along confidential documents, Sophie is found dead, kicking off an intense game of cat-and-mouse set against the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. As can be expected with a modern international thriller, friends become enemies, enemies become allies, and no one can be trusted.
Rounding out the incredible cast of The Night Manager’s first season was Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander, Elizabeth Debicki, Alistair Petrie, and Natasha Little. Based on a novel by the New York Times best-selling author John Le Carre (other novels he wrote include Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and the classic, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold), the BBC series was met with both critical and popular acclaim.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series is 91 percent fresh, with an audience rating of 89 percent. Those numbers are phenomenal and match Tom Hiddleston’s fresh rating for The Avengers, though it’s two percent below his best MCU film, Thor: Ragnarok, and three percent behind his Disney+ series, Loki. . Despite the difference in ratings, the MCU isn’t for everyone and while Hiddleston is fantastic as the Norse God of Lies, his turn in The Night Manager is perfect for non-superhero fans.
Regarding modern espionage series, Amazon’s Jack Ryan and The Terminal List, both based off of novels, have been the best shows of late. Bringing back The Night Manager, even if Tom Hiddleston isn’t playing an actual night manager in season two, is great news for the many fans of the genre. While it may not air this year, Hiddleston’s fans don’t have much to worry about, as the acclaimed star is coming back to his most well-known role, even if it hasn’t earned him as many awards as Jonathan Pine.
Loki Season 2 will air six episodes later this year and at the moment, Disney is keeping everything about the show shrouded in mystery. We do know that Owen Wilson is back as Mobius with Sophie Di Martino as Sylvie, Tara Strong returns as Miss Minutes while Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Wunmi Monsaku reprise their roles as Ravonna Renslayer and Hunter B-15. Considering the time-breaking first season finale and the arrival of Kang (Jonathan Majors) in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, there’s an infinite amount of possibilie storylines for the first MCU series to return for a second bow.
The Night Manager Season 2 starts filming this year, and allegedly, it’s the first of two more seasons. Tom Hiddleston fans will have plenty of opportunities to catch their favorite star playing morally dubious characters that everyone is rooting for.
