Jamie Lee Curtis Says Sequel To Her Most Beloved Movie Is Definitely Happening
Jamie Lee Curtis says Freaky Friday 2 is inevitable.
Don’t freak out, but a sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday may be on the way. During an interview with Variety at the Producers Guild Awards, Jamie Lee Curtis dropped a big hint about an on-screen reunion with Lindsay Lohan for Freaky Friday 2. According to the Everything Everywhere All at Once star, the movie is inevitable.
“Without saying there’s anything officially happening,” Curtis said, “I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.” This was not the first time Jamie Lee Curtis has teased a Freaky Friday sequel. Earlier this month, Curtis posted a picture of her with Lindsay Lohan captioned, “It’s Friday. I’m just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!”
All this comes after a tease during the November premiere of Glass Onion, during which Jamie Lee Curtis confirmed then that “the right people are talking” about a Freaky Friday sequel. She said that she and Lohan are now 64 and 36 years old and that there is a beautiful story to be told with their characters 20 years later. She concluded that the decision is ultimately Disney’s, but expressed her optimism and commitment to the project.
It seems the star of Mean Girls is up for a return, as well. After a career lull, Lindsay Lohan soared back into the spotlight in Netflix’s Falling for Christmas. She commented with heart eyes and thumbs-up emojis on the Instagram post of her with Jamie Lee Curtis, signaling that the actress may be ready to ride the comeback wave into Freaky Friday 2.
Jamie Lee Curtis is no stranger to resurrecting old roles. In 2022, Curtis wrapped up her role in the Halloween franchise in which she reprised her role as Laurie Strode to face off with the killer Michael Myers. But the real buzz for the actress this past year has been from the hit film Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Jamie Lee Curtis and her Everything Everywhere team have been magnets for accolades this awards season. The film has been nominated for countless honors and leads the way at this year’s upcoming Academy Awards with 11 nominations. Its main cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, and Ke Huy Quan, are all competing for Oscars.
Whether or not Jamie Lee Curtis wins the Oscar, the buzz around the star over the past few years will almost certainly help her in the quest to make Freaky Friday 2. If Disney needs any more convincing, they need only look to the 2003 box office.
Audiences lined up out the door to see Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis switch bodies in Freaky Friday. The film grossed well over $100 million against a $26 million budget. Beginning as a 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers, Disney adapted Freaky Friday into a movie in 1976 and again for TV in 1995 before Lohan and Curtis delivered the definitive screen version of the story.
If Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis successfully lift their Freaky Friday sequel off the ground, they will enter uncharted territory. For the many forms the story has taken over the decades, Freaky Friday has yet to receive a sequel. But as Curtis said, there is a beautiful story to tell – as long as Disney flips the switch.
