Dana Carvey And Mike Myers Are Making Wayne’s World 3?
Dana Carvey showed Mike Myers dressed up as Wayne in a very familiar-looking basement, possibly confirming Wayne's World 3 is in production.
Although many actors have a multitude of talents outside of acting, a recent image of Wayne’s World star Dana Carvey painting is causing a ton of buzz on social media for an entirely different reason and has fans wondering whether Wayne’s World 3 is in production. A recent post to Carvey’s Instagram account set in a setting familiar to fans of 1992’s Wayne’s World.
Dana Carvey posted an image to his Instagram on Tuesday, February 21st coupled with the caption “Garth says, ‘I like to paint.'” The post shows himself and Mike Myers in the Wayne’s World basement set. Myers is posing on the Wayne’s World couch while Carvey is drawing a detailed, almost photo-realistic painting of Wayne.
Fans are speculating whether this means the iconic characters Wayne and Garth are returning in Wayne’s World 3 after a long hiatus. Although nothing has been confirmed, many fans are hopeful that the comedic duo might be close to returning to a role that, for many, captured the ethos of a generation.
Many people forget that the 1993 comedy film Wayne’s World was a spin-off of what was originally a Saturday Night Live skit. It was the second film based on a Saturday Night Live sketch after The Blues Brothers in 1980. Wayne’s World was directed by Penelope Spheeris, who had directed several films including Suburbia and 1985’s The Boys Next Door starring Charlie Sheen, and the music documentary series The Decline of Western Civilization, although Wayne’s World remains her most successful film to date.
The premise of the film is that Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) are two rock music fans who host a public-access television show called Wayne’s World from Wayne’s parents’ basement. When a handsome television producer (Rob Lowe) starts gunning to pick up their show for commercial television, the two must work together to fight back against the man and keep the integrity of their show.
Wayne’s World was a cultural phenomenon that encapsulated a specific subculture in the 90s. Although Wayne’s World 2 was released the following year in 1993, it couldn’t capture the same verve as the first. Following the box office disappointment, there were no public talks regarding Wayne’s World 3.
Wayne’s World has been referenced extensively in pop culture, other movies, and television, even making it to several children’s television shows. Between The Lions, a puppet-based children’s television series, produced a short repeating segment called “Gawain’s Word,” while Nickelodeon’s The Amanda Show had Drake Bell spoofing Wayne in a segment called “Totally Kyle” where Bell’s character appeared in a long blonde wig and filmed from a rock-music paraphernalia-laden basement.
Wayne’s World was filled with several references now commonly used in pop culture, most notable of which might be the popularization of the term “That’s what she said.” One scene in which Wayne, Garth, and friends lip-sync to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” in an AMC Pacer is one of the most well-known scenes in the film and helped propel the single back to #2 on the charts (according to Forbes, helping the song reach a historic milestone).
Recently, the two reprised their respective roles in 2021 during the Super Bowl when they appeared alongside rapper Cardi B in an advertisement for Uber Eats. Still, after 30 years, there has been little chatter until now about the return of the iconic rock fan duo in another feature-length film.
Although it has not been confirmed, many fans out there would love to see the return of Wayne and Garth to the big screen in Wayne’s World 3. Many are interested to see how Meyers and Carvey would change the two characters for a modern audience and how shifts in the contemporary music scene would have impacted the characters.
