M3GAN Streaming Release Date Revealed
M3GAN will officially be released on Peacock on February 24th.
Some tropes have found a secure footing in the thriller and horror genres of the movie industry, two of them being dolls and artificial intelligence. Chucky changed the landscape of horror movies by creating a fear of inanimate objects that look like children, and everything from I, Robot to Terminator has warned us against the potential dangers of machines that can think for themselves. This year, the two tropes combined for the thriller M3GAN, which according to Deadline, will stream on Peacock on February 24 for all who missed the theatrical release.
There aren’t very many names in the horror genre that are bigger than James Wan (Insidious and The Conjuring) and Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, Sinister, and The Purge). When the two come together, it is bound to be something horror fans are going to love, and when M3GAN hit the theaters back in January, it fulfilled those expectations with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and a 78% score from the audiences. The movie was actually so well received that an unexpected sequel was greenlit already, only Jason Blum remarked that the film won’t be rushed and has a tentative release date in 2025.
The film revolves around the death of the parents of Cady (Violet McGraw), which lands her in the care of a career-focused aunt named Gemma (Allison Williams). When she finds herself in over her head trying to be a parent, Gemma turns to her creation at her company, a very advanced doll named M3GAN. In true Isaac Asimov fashion, M3GAN’s operating protocols go to the extreme and cause her to begin a murderous rampage to protect Cady.
While the film looked like another run-of-the-mill horror flick involving a murderous doll (because that happens often enough to be considered run-of-the-mill), the trailer showing M3GAN performing a popular TikTok dance sent the video viral. The spread of the trailer caused the studio to make the decision to release a PG-13 version of the film due to the desire to reach the younger crowd loving the dance. Of course, a PG-13 horror movie means there are a lot of gore and terrifying moments that are left on the cutting room floor.
While the studio used examples like The Sixth Sense, The Ring, A Quiet Place, and others to show that a horror movie doesn’t need to be rated R to succeed, writer Akela Cooper suggests that they went all out on the gore. According to her, our favorite murder doll had a much higher body count in the unrated version. Luckily for horror fans, the streaming date will also debut that bloodier and more gory version of M3GAN.
Thanks to the new advancements in streaming services, fans have a much shorter wait to see films they have missed in the theater. While they often get the identical versions that the theater-goers got months before, nowadays, they are getting unrated and extended cuts months earlier than they did back in the DVD days. For fans of the murdering dolls and artificial intelligence genres, M3GAN is coming sooner than expected.
