Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were just hit with crushing news, as one of the most anticipated films of 2023 was just announced to be delayed. The Marvels, set to unite Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel with Kamala Khan, better known as Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau, was ready to land on the big screen on July 28, 2023. But now, the movie has been delayed nearly four months, with a November 10, 2023, theatrical release.

A new poster for the film broke the surprising news and teased the ensemble stars with an epic earth-to-galaxy background. Planted on the ground, we see Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), looking up at a stoically posed Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). But even higher up in the stars appears Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), whose superhero name has yet to be revealed.

The news broke earlier today, as the official Twitter account for the studio shared the shocking information. Without clearly stating that the new release date was a pushback, or giving any specific reason, they made the announcement by sharing a brand new teaser poster for the movie. “Higher. Further. Faster. Together.” accompanied the poster.

We can easily speculate that the decision to push the release date back on The Marvels is part of a larger picture of issues within the MCU. On the streaming side, Disney has reported abysmal outlooks on Marvel projects. Most recently, the House of Mouse reported plans to cut back their Marvel streaming content.

Five Marvel shows were slated to release in 2023. Now, only two of those series are planned to land on the streamer this year. The popular Loki Season 2 is still set to be released sometime this summer, and so is the brand new series, Secret Invasion. The Marvels delay is likely tied in with the decision to hold off releasing other planned shows.

The other three planned series, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Ironheart, and Echo haven’t been canceled, just delayed like The Marvels. But unlike Brie Larson’s next outing as Carol Danvers, which is only set back a few months, the other shows aren’t expected to hit Disney+ until 2024. And who knows what could happen in the next year.

The Marvels may be delayed, but that only gives Disney more time to hype what is set to be their most important film in Phase 5. Much of the upcoming film remains a mystery. We don’t even have a teaser trailer for the cosmic movie yet.

Brie Larson in Ms. Marvel

What we do know is that the movie will take place following the events that occurred in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, which introduced Kamala Khan, who is said to be the most important character in the upcoming movie. Most likely following the MCU’s normal superhero formula, the film will center around Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, and Rambeau navigating a bizarre body swap.

Nia DaCosta directs The Marvels, and the film will also see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. MCU fans are surely disappointed with this major delay, but at least we can look forward to the rag-tag Guardians crew as they go on what is likely to be their last adventure in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which releases on May 5, 2023. After that, we will have to wait six long months to see Brie Larson suped up.
