Vin Diesel Is Bringing Back Riddick And Reuniting With The Right Person To Do It
Vin Diesel is reuniting with director David Twohy for the next Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya.
Vin Diesel is mostly known for his many Fast and the Furious movies, but his best character, Riddick, belongs to a different franchise altogether. The character was introduced in the 2004 film Pitch Black and proved popular enough to warrant two sequels that starred Vin Diesel and were directed by Pitch Black director David Twohy. Now, Deadline reports that Vin Diesel and Twohy are teaming up to bring us a fourth entry in the franchise, Riddick: Furya.
While this franchise has proven popular over the years, we likely would never be getting a fourth movie if not for the sheer passion Vin Diesel has for his Riddick character. In fact, via One Race Films, Vin Diesel is a producer for the upcoming film. As writer and director David Twohy notes, he has been working with Vin Diesel and the star’s production company for more than 20 years, and they haven’t been afraid to create some unexpected continuations for the franchise, including two (surprisingly great) video games, assorted motion picture comics, and even an anime film.
However, nothing carries quite the cultural cachet as a major Hollywood movie, and it looks like Vin Diesel’s latest return to the character of Riddick will be the most ambitious adventure yet. The film revolves around Riddick finally returning to his homeworld (the titular Furya), a planet that he believes was mostly left as a lifeless husk by the Necromongers. Once he arrives, though, he discovers that not only are some Furyans alive but that they need his help in fighting back against a frightening new foe.
One of the more interesting things about this movie announcement is that once Vin Diesel’s Riddick returns to his home planet, he is surprised to discover that some of the surviving natives are more like him than he expected. This would seem to indicate that some of them may share his heightened night vision that requires Riddick to wear these goggles most of the time to block out what would otherwise be painful light, and some may even share his uncanny fighting abilities. Thematically, this is likely going to intensify the desire for the character to protect the rest of the Furyans because they share a special kinship, and we can only hope this results in him giving a Dom-style speech to his fellow Furyans about the importance of family.
Of course, we wouldn’t have all those Fast and the Furious memes about Vin Diesel’s character if he hadn’t devoted the last 22 years to bringing those films to life. For a time, it seemed like the veteran actor wanted to do little more than alternate between insane car movies and providing the voice of Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Vin Diesel obviously loves the character of Riddick, and he seems fully devoted to continuing his one franchise that is even older than The Fast and the Furious.
Unfortunately, beyond the announcement and brief description of the movie, we don’t know anything else about what Vin Diesel’s latest outing as Riddick will look like. When the 2013 Riddick came out, many fans and critics pointed out that it was a refreshing return to basics when it came to sci-fi action. Since this could very well be Riddick’s last outing, and since his character previously pointed out that society doesn’t “know what to do with just one of me,” we expect a movie that unites him with similar members of his race will do nothing less than bring the house down.
