See Sydney Sweeney As DC’s New Supergirl

After keeping fans in suspense for what felt like ages, James Gunn revealed the slate of upcoming DC movies and television shows. One of these upcoming movies is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, giving us our first chance to get a live-action Supergirl film since the embarrassing movie from 1984. We don’t yet know who will be cast as the title role, so Giant Freaking Robot decided to create fanart to see what rising star Sydney Sweeney would look like if she suited up as Superman’s cousin.
Over the years, Sydney Sweeney has had a number of different roles that really stretched her skills as an actor. This included a role in the excellent HBO miniseries Sharp Objects, the Netflix series Everything Sucks!, and a recurring role in the dystopian show The Handmaid’s Tale. Sweeney even starred in the Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but it was arguably the hit television show Euphoria that helped transform her into a major star.
In recent years, Sydney Sweeney has been catching the eye of critics and fans alike. For her role in Euphoria, the actor was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2022, and for her role in The White Lotus, she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie that same year. When such a young actor consistently provides awesome performances and generates major buzz, it only makes sense for a major studio to lock her down for a starring superhero role.
And right now, Sydney Sweeney is arguably the perfect age to portray the kind of Supergirl they are trying to bring to the DCU. This upcoming Supergirl film is based on Tom King’s excellent recent comics, and the movie intends to contrast the optimism Superman has from being raised on Earth to the cynicism Supergirl has from growing up around so much combat and death before being sent to Earth. In other words, the character will have to both be younger than Superman (who has not been cast yet) and project the fierceness of someone who grew up understanding only fighting and death, and we think that the young Sweeney has the dramatic chops to pull this off.
Ironically, one of the likeliest reasons we won’t see Sydney Sweeney as Supergirl in the DCU is that she has a prior commitment to Marvel. Sony is still desperately trying to create their own extended Spider-Man universe, and Sweeney is currently slated to play an unspecified role in Madame Web. While working for Sony is not the same thing as being locked down by Disney, James Gunn, and other DCU architects may be hesitant to cast a former Marvel hero to headline one of the most prominent DC superhero films.
Still, stranger things have happened, and we can’t deny that Sydney Sweeney would look absolutely perfect rocking the iconic red and blue. She’s even studied martial arts since she was a child, which would help breathe new life into those fight scenes against the Big Bad. That might help the upcoming DCU movies avoid the most prominent Kryptonite of them all: awful CGI fights that look like Playstation 3 video game cutscenes.
