Best Sitcom Revival Just Renewed For Season 2
Night Court Season 2 has been confirmed by NBC.
Night Court has been renewed for Season 2 after airing just four episodes on NBC. The decision comes after the show enjoyed solid viewership since its premiere on January 17th. According to Deadline, the sitcom reached 25.7 million viewers across multiple platforms, making it the biggest comedy premiere for the network since Will & Grace in 2017.
The debut episode was also ranked as the number one broadcast premiere of the 2022/2023 season across the ad-friendly 18 to 49 demographic and total audience. Although subsequent installments have lost a few viewers the comedy is still averaging better than six million same-day viewers. With more than 25 million people watching some of the series premiere, a Night Court Season 2 renewal is not surprising.
President of Scripted Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, Lisa Katz talked about Night Court Season 2 in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s so rewarding to have audiences respond and return to a show in which they have such incredibly warm feelings,” she said. “More broadly, it’s a testament to how broadcast television is still a huge driver of communal viewing.”
Katz credited NBC’s studio partners, the incredibly talented writers, and the wonderful Night Court cast for securing Season 2. She also thanked producers and the crew for transforming a lower Manhattan courtroom into a true family. The series will remain in production after season one is complete to get ahead of potential union strikes later in the year.
The Night Court revival, including Season 2, is set decades after the original series which ran from 1984 to 1992. The story follows Abby Stone who follows in the footsteps of her father to become a night court judge. Her good humor and unrelenting optimism are often a little excessive for the cynics in her circle. But her sunny predisposition is infectious and encourages others to see the bright side too.
Melissa Rauch leads the Night Court cast as Judge Abby Stone and will reprise the role in Season 2. She stars alongside John Larroquette who returns to his role as assistant district attorney, Dan Fielding from the original series. The sitcom also features India de Beaufort as Olivia, Kapil Talwalkar as Neil, and Lacretta as Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous.
Like season one, Night Court Season 2 will be executive produced by Melissa Rauch and her husband Winston Rauch for After January Productions. Dan Rubin writes and executive produces the series along with John Larroquette. Warner Bros. Television Studios, which was behind the original series, will also produce, The Hollywood Reporter says.
Following the announcement of Night Court Season 2, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey said the studio is overjoyed that court will remain in session. “We’re so grateful to our colleagues at NBC, to the richly talented creative team led by Melissa Rauch, Winston Rauch, Dan Rubin, and John Larroquette, and to the stellar ensemble cast,” he said via Variety.
The next episode of the popular comedy is set to air on February 7th. Meanwhile, the next season currently has no release date.
