Kevin Bacon Is Finally Ready To Return To His Best Role
Kevin Bacon responded to a fan on Twitter that's willing to return to the wonderful world of Tremors.
Kevin Bacon as an actor is so prolific that it seems everyone in Hollywood is only six degrees of separation away from him. Throughout his long and historic career, which ranges from the big screen to the small screen, one of Bacon’s films has risen to be heads and shoulders above all others. A classic film that has often been imitated but never perfectly duplicated, of course the Footloose star’s best film is Tremors.
Responding to a fan’s tweet, Kevin Bacon has finally publicly admitted that he will return to the wonderful world of Tremors. For an entire generation of fans, any film that depicts a sudden explosion from underground will bring back warm and fuzzy memories of the monster worms from the 1990 classic. This time around it just happened to be a quick shot from the latest Shazam: Fury of the Gods trailer, which features a dragon but no giant worms.
Kevin Bacon’s greatest role saw him as Valentine “Val” McKee, a local handyman in the ironically named Perfection Nevada, a mountain town in the desert. While leaving with his friend Earl, played by Fred Ward, the pair come across a dead body with the local coroner saying he died of dehydration from being too scared to come back to the ground. From such humble beginnings, Tremors then becomes one of the greatest monster movies of all time.
Rounding out the cast, and making sure they’re only one degree from Kevin Bacon, are Michael Gross and Reba McEntire as a survivalist couple with one of the greatest monster movie scenes in cinema history, Finn Carter as Rhonda the geology graduate student, and Bobby Jacob as Melvin Plug, the local boy annoying everyone. Tremors is one of the strangest possible films that would go on to spawn a franchise.
Released in January of 1990, back when that was used by studios as a dumping ground for films, the Kevin Bacon movie came in below expectations but managed to make $16 million against a budget of $10 million. $6 million even back in 1990 wasn’t a great return, but Tremors went on to have a very successful run as a rental, becoming one of the most rented films of the decade. Now a cult classic, six more films and even a television series followed, with the most recent coming out in 2020.
Kevin Bacon tried to return to the Tremors universe in 2018 in a new series that was ultimately passed over by all of the networks. Amazingly, it’s been Michael Gross as Burt the survivalist that has starred in most of the direct-to-video sequels. While none of the sequels have met the amazing highs of the original film, it is nonetheless impressive that a small monster movie from 1990 has been kept alive for so long.
Attempting to win a bet, or just because he loves movies with weird concepts, Kevin Bacon will appear in the upcoming Toxic Avenger reboot. Starring Peter Dinklage as the Avenger with Elijah Wood and Jacob Trembly also involved in the bizarre project. While we may never get another Tremors, so long as Bacon is willing, hope is alive..
