Tom Hardy’s Forgotten Crime Thriller Tops The Streaming Chart
Tom Hardy's forgotten mob movie, The Drop, is a streaming hit.
Before he was Eddie Brock in Venom, but after his role in Star Trek: Nemesis, Tom Hardy starred in a little crime movie titled The Drop. While the feature received a slew of good reviews and currently sits on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89 percent critics rating, it’s been one of those movies finding itself lost in the masses. But those who love a good crime drama with a stacked cast have been unearthing the feature over the last few weeks, leading to it toppling the streaming charts at the number one spot, according to FlixPatrol.
If you like great acting, a well-thought-out storyline, and all the New Jersey and New York accents you can handle, there’s no better movie for you to check out this weekend than The Drop. Along with Tom Hardy, the feature also stars Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Matthias Schoenaerts (Loft), and – oh yeah – the OG of mafioso productions, James Gandolfini. In fact, The Drop would be Gandolfini’s final feature-length role, as the actor would sadly pass away one year before the movie was released.
The Drop centers around a bartender named Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) who works for his cousin and turns his head when mafia members carry out their business within the pub’s walls. His life soon turns upside down after befriending his neighbor, Nadia (Noomi Rapace) with the two quickly developing romantic feelings for one another. The catch is that Nadia’s abusive ex is still in the picture, and to make matters worse, the pub has just been robbed, forcing Bob to learn more about a world that he was trying to stay away from.
The film would be a box office success, raking in over $18.5 million and more than covering its production costs. Critics enjoyed the feature that wasn’t the typical run-of-the-mill mafia-based crime story, with many praising the performances given by Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini. If you catch the feature while it’s tearing up the charts, you’ll almost definitely recognize several members of the ensemble cast which includes Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black), John Ortiz (Fast & the Furious), Ann Dowd (Garden State), Danny McCarthy (Prison Break), Chris Sullivan (This is Us), and Morgan Spector (Homeland).
As mentioned, the feature would be the last of The Sopranos star James Gandolfini who was known for his Emmy-winning performance as mob boss Tony Soprano on the hit HBO series. While he was massively talented at playing the show’s titular don, Gandolfini shared his genre-crossing talents with his fans via other projects including Where the Wild Things Are, Enough Said, and Zero Dark Thirty. The Drop features James Gandolfini as Marvin Stipler, the cousin to Tom Hardy’s Bob.
As it seems like everything that Tom Hardy touches turns to gold, The Drop’s current crushing run is just another example of that. Since he first crashed onto the screen in Black Hawk Down, the actor has been a household name known for his ability to pack a punch both literally and dramatically.
