We Now Know If The Recruit Will Get A Second Season On Netflix
The Recruit has been greenlit for a second season at Netflix.
The fate of The Recruit has been officially declassified. Variety reported that Netflix, notorious for canceling new shows despite vocal fanbases, announced that the adventure series has been renewed for a second season. Black Adam actor Noah Centineo will return as the woefully inexperienced CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks for more espionage antics.
The first season follows Hendricks at the very start of his career as a lawyer for the Office of the General Consul at the CIA. He intercepts a threat from an imprisoned CIA asset, Max Meladze, who threatens to dispel government secrets unless she is released. Hawley’s attempt to resolve the matter draws him ever deeper into the life-threatening landscape of international politics, and entangles him in Max’s life.
Season one of The Recruit concluded with a big revelation and a massive cliffhanger, leaving Centineo tied to a chair being questioned by a gun-wielding mystery woman. The show’s first season was a crowd pleaser, amassing an 86% user rating on the review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes. The decision to end the season on a cliffhanger was a bold move, but the choice paid off as Netflix has opted to allow Hawley and co. to pick up where they left off.
Netflix has not shared plot details for the upcoming second season of The Recruit. The show will bring back creator Alexi Hawley, and it is expected that Centineo will be joined once again by co-stars Aarti Mann, Colton Dunn, Fivel Stewart, and Vondie Curtis Hall. The fate of Max Meladze, played by Guardians of the Galaxy actress Laura Haddock, remains a mystery.
The renewal of The Recruit comes on the heels of a big year for Noah Centineo, who starred alongside Dwayne Johnson in last year’s DC tentpole Black Adam. In that film, Centineo portrayed the Justice Society member Atom Smasher. With the fate of DC films in constant flux under the new regime of James Gunn and Peter Safran, it is unknown whether or not Centineo will return to the role.
Noah Centineo is also set to appear in The Diary, a romance drama from writer and director Jackie Chan. It tells the story of a man who leaves Shanghai in the 1930s to find his lost love in Europe. In addition to a busy schedule shooting The Recruit, Centineo will also appear in The Greatest Disaster in Cinema History, a film about a young director whose first movie pitch is taken over by an actor who drags the filmmaker through the madness of modern Hollywood.
A release date has not been announced for season 2 of The Recruit, but Hawley and Centineo, who also executive produces the show, expressed their excitement to continue the spiraling story. Hawley claimed that season 2 would “turn it all up to 11”, promising even more twists, turns, and haphazard action for Owen Hendricks and the tangled web of friends and foes surrounding him.
A change in leadership at Netflix, along with continuing shifts in the streaming market, have let many wary of Netflix’s future. The renewal of The Recruit comes as a good sign for the streamer, which is on the hunt for high quality hits. As the story of The Recruit continues, it may even cement itself as a key piece in the Netflix catalog.
