The Fate of Titans On HBO Max Has Been Determined
HBO Max's DC Titans series has officially been canceled.
We have some heartbreaking news for fans of the DC Comics series Titans. According to Variety, the show will end with its fourth season. Fortunately, the creative team was reportedly aware that the program’s current season would be its last, and it was crafted to have a definitive ending.
Titans initially premiered on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming platform and moved to HBO Max for its third season. The series recently released the first half of its fourth season, with the six remaining episodes set to release later this year. The decision to cancel the show reportedly had nothing to do with the company’s cost-cutting measures implemented under CEO David Zazlav.
“We are very proud of [the] series,” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement. “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such a thriller, action-packed, heartfelt series.” The spokesperson went on to thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker and executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and crew at Weed Road Pictures.
Walker added how incredibly proud he is of the talented cast, crew, and writers in bringing Titans to life. He went on to thank Warner Bros. Television and HBO Max for being superb partners. He concluded his statement by recognizing the show’s passionate fans and thanking them for their continued support over the years.
Premiering October 12, 2018, Titans follows a group of young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. The series was created by Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Greg Berlanti and stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Teagan Croft, Curran Walters, and Joshua Orpin.
All four seasons of Titans have been well received by both critics and audiences alike, with high scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, the show has performed well on HBO Max. Unfortunately, following the recent appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-heads of DC Studios, the series likely didn’t have a place in the pair’s upcoming slate of film and television shows.
Also ending with its current fourth season is Doom Patrol, starring Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Matt Bomer, Brendan Fraser, and Matthew Zuk. Like Titans, the series originally premiered on DC Universe to help launch the platform and moved to HBO Max in 2020. Created by Jeremy Carver, the story follows the adventures of an idealistic mad scientist and his field team of superpowered outcasts.
Although the news that Titans and Doom Patrol have been axed is undoubtedly devastating for fans, it’s refreshing to know the creative teams behind both shows were made aware of the cancellations in advance. They’ll now have the opportunity to give each series a proper ending. The remaining episodes of both shows are scheduled to drop later this year.
Meanwhile, DC Studios’ co-heads Gunn and Safran are set to make some major announcements regarding the company’s upcoming slate of film and television shows very soon. So far, the pair has been extremely tight-lipped about their vision for the DC Universe going forward. It probably goes without saying that we’re beyond anxious to see what the duo has in store for our favorite heroes down the line.
