The Best Animated Superhero Series Is Getting A Live-Action Adaptation
Robert Kirkman has stated that a live-action Invincible movie is still being planned.
It may be slow going, but a live-action adaptation of Invincible is in the works. According to MovieWeb, the creator of the Invincible comic book, Robert Kirkman, has confirmed that the movie is going to get made and that the success of the animated series is going to help it along. “We’re very much still working on that,” he said.
“Sometimes movies take a little bit longer. I think it’s safe to say, if anything, the show has just helped that immensely. People are very excited about that movie potential at Universal. So we’re riding that excitement and trying to push things forward as quickly as possible,” Kirkman added.
It is important to note, however, that the live-action Invincible movie will be a lot different from the animated series. Both will be based on the original comic, but Kirkman wants the movie to be “unique” and to have its own identity instead of just being a continuation or reproduction of the animated series. It will, however, be faithful to the source material, which means that audiences will basically have two different but hopefully equally cool versions of the story they love.
Kirkman has been sharing little tidbits and updates about the status of a live-action Invincible film since 2021 when the animated series debuted. It still doesn’t sound like it is actively in production yet, but it is definitely in the planning stage. Kirkman is just as excited about the project as fans are (maybe even more so), so when something is official, he will surely let us know.
While a live-action Invincible film may still be years away, the animated series is currently a huge hit on Amazon’s Prime Video platform. Fans devoured the first season in 2021, and have been eagerly awaiting the second season, which should be premiering on the platform later this year. A third season has been greenlit as well, so there is plenty more Invincible content to come.
Both the live-action and animated Invincible projects are set in the Image Comics Universe and follow the coming-of-age story of a teenager named Mark Greyson, a.k.a. the titular Invincible. He is the oldest child of Omni-Man, who is the most powerful human being on Earth. The comic book series, written by Kirkman and featuring art by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, ran from January 2003 to February 2018 and spanned 144 well-received issues.
The animated version of the highly successful comic famously features J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man, with Sandra Oh voicing his wife, Debbie Grayson, and Steven Yeun voicing Mark Grayson/Invincible. The main focus of the animated series is to show the darker, more difficult side of being a superhero, which audiences find very appealing.
The show has received loads of accolades from both critics and viewers alike, thanks to its faithfulness to the comics, its convincing voice-over work, its writing, and its action sequences. So, it is no wonder that fans are clamoring for a live-action version of Invincible, and are waiting and hoping to hear more news about whether the project is moving forward.
For the moment, all we can say is that a live-action Invincible movie does seem to be happening … we just can’t say when yet. But if Robert Kirkman (and fans of both the comics and the animated series) has his way, it will be sooner rather than later.
