Eddie Murphy Refuses To Return For Blockbuster Reboot
Eddie Murphy said he won't return to Haunted Mansion because his version was so terrible.
Eddie Murphy was once in the first adaptation of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, which is now being rebooted with a brand-new cast. Murphy had apparently been asked if he would return for the reboot, or sequel depending on how you look at it. However, Murphy hilariously stated, “I did a Haunted Mansion movie, and it wasn’t very good, so I don’t know if they want to bring the old baggage and have me stinking up the new one.”
At least Eddie Murphy can laugh at his own failures, though we would argue that his Haunted Mansion movie wasn’t that terrible, as it still made $182 million at the box office. Still, it is great that he can have a sense of humor about one of the more failed movies in his legendary career. Murphy was speaking about his career to Entertainment Tonight after winning the Cecile B. DeMille award when he was also asked about his hilarious Will Smith joke at the Golden Globes.
Eddie Murphy reminded the interviewers that he is still “a comic,” which is certainly true. Murphy told the slap joke at the Golden Globes, and also stated that his Haunted Mansion was not that great, and it just reminds us that the man is still regarded as one of the most prolific stand-up comedians in the history of the genre. Though Murphy indicated that he would not be returning to the new Haunted Mansion movie, we would enjoy seeing him appear in a cameo of some sort.
The new Haunted Mansion boasts a massive cast that could have benefitted the Eddie Murphy version greatly. The new reboot movie will feature Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Jared Leto, Winona Ryder, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Hasan Minaj, and many more. The new movie will follow Gabbie (Dawson) as she hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help remove the ghostly figures that are plaguing her newly bought mansion.
Though this new Haunted Mansion has likely nothing to do with the previous movie, Disney could opt to connect the two by bringing in Eddie Murphy. Murphy could potentially appear as some ghost that never made it out of the past mansion, and he has been trapped there for years. That is likely not to happen, especially after the man said he has no urge to star in the new movie, but it is still fun to think about.
For now, everyone can soon see Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, which is the newest film in the hit 1980s series. The fourth film will continue the franchise and is set to debut on Netflix sometime in 2023. It is currently in the post-production stages, which could mean that we will see this highly anticipated comedy release sometime in the summer.
Eddie Murphy is hopefully going to return to the stage, as he has still proven that he is one of the best stand-up comedians to ever do it. He became a movie star and stepped away from comedy, but his earlier specials are still regarded as some of the best. Though he may have made some terrible movies like Haunted Mansion, at least he can laugh about them now.
