Star Wars Movie From Watchmen Showrunner Canceled?
Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof says he has a mystery Star Wars movie in the works, but Disney executives may have canceled the project already.
Last year, there were strong rumors that we would be getting a Star Wars movie from Damon Lindelof. Lindelof is best known for his amazing and successful Watchmen series on HBO. Many fans of that galaxy far, far away were looking forward to the unique spin Lindelof would have on the Star Wars universe. However, Hollywood producer Kamran Pasha appeared in a video from YouTuber Valliant Renegade and alleged that when it comes to announcements about this movie, “Lindelof did not have the authorization to announce he had an upcoming movie at Lucasfilm” and is trying to force Disney into making a movie they never wanted to make.
This is where things get a bit confusing because Kathleen Kennedy has already confirmed that we’ll be getting a Star Wars movie from Damon Lindelof. In that same video, Pasha claims that Lindelof essentially made a fake announcement and that Kennedy was forced to confirm the announcement to save face. Now, she is tied to the success or failure of this project, and Pasha alleges that she personally asked Bob Iger for permission to stay at Disney and oversee this new film and that Iger gave her a firm “no” to that idea and even told her “you and I know that’s not real.”
Why would Lindelof announce a fake movie in the first place, especially if it might jeopardize his relationship with Disney? According to Pasha, the Star Wars movie might not be real, but Damon Lindelof is trying to will it into existence by making announcements on his own and generating buzz. Pasha claims that Leslye Headland did the same thing to make The Acolyte television series into a reality and that Lindelof is hoping to make that bold strategy work for him.
Additionally, Pasha claims that the very idea of a Star Wars movie by Damon Lindelof is being used to advance his career to open doors that would otherwise be closed. Pasha says that Lindelof is someone whose career had fallen off in recent years but he has now managed to become “the talk of the town.” And his method of becoming relevant again allegedly involved announcing a fake movie to get a face-saving confirmation from Disney, allowing his agent to get Lindelof exciting new opportunities before Disney either gives in to his demands or just quietly cancels the project.
If Pasha’s scoops are true, then it’s fair to say that this Star Wars movie from Damon Lindelof hasn’t been “canceled” so much as it was never going to happen in the first place. We don’t know much about what the movie could have been about other than the fact that it would be a standalone movie set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that may or may not incorporate some of the characters from the sequel trilogy of films. Such a movie would strike a balance in the fandom (if not The Force) by blending new characters and old into smaller-scale stories, but it looks like this project has become a ghost (and not the blue kind that you can ask for advice after it’s dead).
