TV’s Best Comedy Just Got Renewed
The hit ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a third season.
Just in time to celebrate some huge wins at the Golden Globes, ABC’s Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a third season. As reported by Variety and others, Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, made the announcement on Wednesday that the sitcom had earned itself a third season.
To those keeping score, the news that Abbott Elementary will get a Season 3 probably isn’t so much news as it is inevitable. The mockumentary sitcom’s second season premiered in November, bringing with it the highest ratings of an ABC comedy telecast in three years. Giving the show a Season 3 was likely the easiest decision that’s been made at ABC in a long time.
The announcement of Abbott Elementary‘s renewal came on the same day the series was honored with three Golden Globes, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The sitcom won out in spite of stiff competition from similarly popular streaming shows like Wednesday, Only Murders in the Building, and The Bear.
Quinta Brunson — who created Abbot Elementary and stars in it — made one of the more memorable acceptance speeches of the night, name checking stars like Seth Rogen and Brad Pitt.
“There are so many people in the room tonight who are the reason why I’m here today. Not to be corny, but Henry Winkler you’re one of the reasons I’m here today because of watching you. Bob Odenkirk I know you’re in your drama bed now but Mr. Show made me want to make television. Seth [Rogen], I know you’re probably high, but from the heart, everything that you’ve ever made made me want to make comedy…. Hey, Brad Pitt. He’s right there.”

Abbott Elementary had perhaps an even more memorable night at the 2022 Emmys, for both good and bad reasons. On the good side of things, Quinta Brunson made history by being the first Black woman to take home three Emmys in the comedy category. On the less great side, many felt her accomplishment was thoughtlessly overshadowed by host Jimmy Kimmel who — apparently over-dedicated to a bit in which he had pretended to pass out — lay prone at Brunson’s feet throughout her acceptance speech.
Premiering in December 2021, Abbott Elementary stars Quinta Brunson as second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, working at the predominantly Black and underfunded Willard R. Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia. In an environment where most teachers don’t last more than a year, Teagues and a dedicated group of teachers work that much harder to give their students the education they deserve. Unfortunately, their jobs are often made more difficult by the bullying of principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James).
Abbott Elementary is currently in the middle of its second season with the next episode airing Wednesday, January 18 on ABC.
