Netflix Announces Whether Wednesday Is Renewed For Season 2
Netflix has finally announced that massive streaming hit, Wednesday, has been renewed for a second season.
Netflix and Wednesday Addams would like to thank audiences for the “pure torture” of being internationally acclaimed for the show based on the character, and they have done so with the official announcement of its renewal for season 2. The streaming giant tweeted the news today along with a video montage of scenes from the show. Lead actress Jenna Ortega provided a voiceover that thanked fans for their dedication as she served the tea about another season.
“Over the past few weeks,” the message from Netflix and Wednesday narrates, “I have been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet. It’s been pure torture.” The camera then zooms in on Wednesday’s mischievous smile as she adds, “Thank you.”
Set partly to the soundtrack of the Netflix show and partly to Wednesday’s dance anthem, Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary,” the video short also features scenes from around the world as fans appear in cosplay, honor the stars of the show, and gather in theaters to view it. Wednesday has certainly struck a chord with viewers, who propelled it to numerous streaming records in a debut week that was shorter than most. The show set records for both Netflix and the Nielsen ratings for streaming, practically guaranteeing that it would be renewed before long.
This didn’t stop rumors from spreading that Amazon Prime might acquire the property as part of its acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which owns the rights to the Addams Family content. It would make sense for the studio to protect its property, especially since the Netflix show is so exceptionally popular and Wednesday Addams could be adding to Amazon Prime’s ratings rather than its rival’s. However, it would seem that whatever negotiations needed to be made have been finalized, which may explain why it took the streamer so long to renew one of its most-watched series.
Show creators Miles Millar and Al Gough previously revealed that they had a few seasons already planned when they pitched the series to Netflix, and have even talked a little about what they are working on for Wednesday Season 2. The first season follows the titular heroine to Nevermore Academy, a school for the spooky and unusual and the alma mater of Gomez and Morticia. Psychic visions and the social politics of being an outcast surround a plot that sees students and citizens of the neighboring town of Jericho being murdered by a mysterious monster.
During the school year, Wednesday makes friends with her roommate Enid, school popular girl Bianca, beekeeper Eugene, and the artistic Xavier. The creators have indicated that the next season of the Netflix show will explore these relationships, as Wednesday learns how to have friendships. At times during the first season, she was cold, devious, and even mean to her peers, but found ways to bond with them anyway, and season 2 will elaborate on these bonds.
The Addams Family has a lot of secrets that the Netflix show will expand upon in Wednesday season 2. In particular, the show will examine the relationship between Wednesday and Morticia as never before, since the Addams daughter has always been portrayed as a pre-teen. With the eldest of the newest Addams generation becoming her own person, the family matriarch must learn to guide her without overstepping the boundaries of her independence.
Netflix has season 1 of Wednesday, so fans can catch up and rewatch while waiting for a release date for season 2.
