First Look At Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow Return For The Flash

Stephen Amell will once again be playing Green Arrow in the Arrowverse, and he just posted his first image since the announcement of himself with The Flash‘s Grant Gustin on Instagram. With trailers in the background, and both stars present, it seems clear this isn’t just a social call. In most likelihood, the pair are on set to film part of the final season of The CW‘s The Flash.
“When Barry Calls… Oliver answers…”, Amell writes in the caption. We don’t know if that’s a hint as to how Stephen Amell’s return to the role of Green Arrow is being made possible narratively, or if he’s speaking figuratively. Regardless, fans of the shrinking Arrowverse are thrilled at the announcement of his return.

The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace said Amell’s appearance will come in episode 9 of the final season, though unfortunately it will be a one-off. The EP promised “thrills, chills and tears” with Amell’s appearance.
According to Deadline, Wallace says that having Stephen Amell reprise the role of Green Arrow in the final season of The Flash brings everything “full circle” for Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen. His character premiered in Arrow — the first series of the Arrowverse — a year before The Flash debuted on The CW.
While the first crossover events in the Arrowverse exclusively involved Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow and Grant Gustin’s The Flash, as the narrative grew so did the crossover events. Eventually The CW’s Arrowverse encompassed The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. And it was when those 6 series made up the Arrowverse that Amell gave his goodbye with the 2019-20 event Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow is forced to sacrifice himself to save the new Multiverse from the plans of the Anti-Monitor, which opens the question of exactly how Oliver Queen will return to the Arrowverse. Obviously, in the world of superheroes very little is out of bounds when it comes to resurrection, but it remains to be seen exactly how that will be achieved in this case.
One of the more likely possibilities to explain Stephen Amell’s return as Green Arrow is time travel. Barry Allen‘s powers have allowed him to travel through time on more than one occasion — and sometimes to disastrous effect — so it’s possible the reunion could be the result of the Flash returning to a time before Oliver’s death.
While The Flash will be concluding with its ninth season, it’s possible the Arrowverse will soldier on. David Ramsey, Amell’s former co-star on Arrow, has hinted that in spite of all the carnage at The CW, his series Justice U — which would see Ramsey’s character John Diggle mentoring young heroes with powers — could still be alive.
