House Of The Dragon Season 2 Plot Details Revealed?
A writer for House of the Dragon season 2 cryptically referenced the "blood and cheese" plotline of the source material.
The hit Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon is gearing up to shoot season 2 soon, according to an inside report from Variety. Sara Hess, a writer for the A Song of Ice and Fire adaptation, sat down with Variety to talk about what to expect from the second season of the HBO show and detailed some key plot points we can look forward to in the upcoming season. The biggest giveaway for fans that Hess provided was the cryptic phrase “Blood and cheese” which should ring a bell for readers of George R.R. Martin‘s 2018 companion book, Fire and Blood.
Blood and cheese isn’t just a concept for the best Halloween-themed charcuterie board you’ve ever heard of, it’s an allusion to two characters from Martin’s Fire and Blood book, which provides a deep anthology of Targaryen ancestors throughout history. There is an arc within the book about carrying out a bloodthirsty plot for revenge against Queen Alicent, King Aegon II, Prince Aemond, and the Greens on behalf of Queen Rhaenyra, Prince Daemon, and the Blacks. Despite some slight deviations from the source material, it appears that House of the Dragon season 2 will include this arc, much to the shock, horror, and intense viewing pleasure of fans around the globe.
Think of blood and cheese as a sort of House of the Dragon season 2 equivalent to the term “Red wedding.” The term would mean effectively nothing to casual show watchers back in 2013, before viewers were subjected to the gut-wrenching outcome of Walter Frey’s men betraying Robb Stark and his army, slaughtering them all at the wedding of Edmure Tully and one of Frey’s many daughters. These days, the term red wedding is as synonymous with treachery and deceit as the phrase “I’m almost finished writing The Winds of Winter” and as ubiquitous as “Winter is coming.”
The revenge plot is confirmed to take place within House of the Dragon season 2, according to Hess, as the first season’s depiction of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys dying at the chomping maw of Aemond Targaryen’s dragon, Vhagar kicks the blood and cheese plot line into motion. Of course, in the first season’s finale, the death is made to appear more as an accident than it is in the source material, but Hess assures us that a brutal vengeance is coming regardless. This plot line is one of the inciting incidents within Fire and Blood that kicks off the events of the infamous Dance of the Dragons, a civil war dividing the Targaryen bloodline in gruesome combat.
With House of the Dragon season 2 on the way, we can rest assured the Dance of the Dragons combat will be all-encompassing. With the source material available on hand, fans of the books will be on the edge of their seats, predicting the broad strokes outcomes of the bloody war, while show-only viewers will be shocked at every gruesome twist and turn. The show’s second season is shaping up to be one of the most graphic seasons of television yet.
