Rian Johnson Hates One Big Part Of Glass Onion
Rian Johnson hates that Glass Onion had to have "A Knives Out Mystery" attached to the title.
Rian Johnson is currently enjoying the success of Glass Onion, but the director recently revealed the biggest aspect of the new sequel movie that he hates the most. During an interview with The Atlantic, Johnson stated, “I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know?”

Apparently, Rian Johnson wanted the movie to just be called Glass Onion but considering that it was connected to Benoit Blanc once again, he likely did not get his way. We would imagine that Netflix was the one who pushed for the title to include “A Knives Out mystery.” Johnson added, “I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time.”
We would agree that the only thing that connects the new movie together is Benoit Blanc, as he is the globe-trotting detective that everyone has seemingly heard of in some capacity. Rian Johnson wrote Glass Onion as a completely different story that had nothing to do with any of the characters in the previous movie. We would have been completely fine with it being called Glass Onion, but that was certainly not our call, nor was it Johnson’s call.
We could also see how Rian Johnson may have wanted to avoid using Knives Out in the title of Glass Onion because casual watchers might have been misled by that in the title. Again, the only person that returns from the original movie is Benoit Blanc, so it makes sense that Johnson wanted the title to be separate from the first movie. There are no additional cameos that would surprise anyone from the first to the second movie.
We would have been fine if Rian Johnson wanted to title it Glass Onion: The Adventures of Benoit Blanc. To be fair, Blanc is the main reason these movies are being made, and he holds the title of the “world’s greatest detective.” He is being mentioned in the same way as Sherlock Holmes is, so maybe adding Blanc to the title would have been more sufficient.
Still, we do understand why Rian Johnson wanted to just title the movie Glass Onion, and it would have fit together nicely. Studio interference can play a big part in getting movies made, and clearly, Johnson was quite upset after having to add Knives Out to the title. Still, the movie is in the same vein as the first, and it is quite a great mystery.
For those who have not seen Rian Johnson’s latest offering, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is available to stream right now on Netflix. Of course, the movie is also in a few select theatres, but it is available to stream as well. The movie brings together an expansive cast that includes Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Edward Norton, Daniel Craig, Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Ethan Hawke, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monae, and more. For those who are fans of the first movie, you will be pleasantly surprised by the second, despite its minimal connection to the first movie.
