Avatar 2 Just Got Destroyed By A Kids Movie
Avatar 2 has a much poorer critic and audience review score on Rotten Tomatoes than Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
The news for Avatar 2 has certainly not been all that great, as the movie is believed to be already underperforming at the box office. To make matters so much worse, the reviews are also in, and the anticipated sequel just got beat by a kid’s movie. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has officially been released, and it has destroyed Avatar 2 on Rotten Tomatoes, as it currently has a 97% critic approval rating and a 98% audience approval rating.
Despite Avatar 2 being labeled as “certified fresh” by critics, the 78% critic rating is clearly a lot less favorable compared to Puss in Boots 2. The audience scores are close enough, but Avatar 2 is still losing 93% to 98% for the Shrek spinoff. We would like to point out that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has only just been released, and those numbers can certainly fluctuate in the coming weeks.
Returning to the world of Pandora in Avatar 2 to see Jake Sully and Neytiri take on the tyrannical government once again is clearly not what audiences want to see right now. They would much rather watch Puss in Boots, who is now leaving behind the life of adventuring to become a domesticated house cat, up until adventure comes knocking once again.
Avatar 2 being beaten out by a kid’s movie is something that might not sit well with James Cameron. The producer/director has already stated that he plans to end the franchise, should the Avatar sequel not live up to expectations and secure a ton of money at the box office. In fact, the sequel will need to become the fourth highest-grossing movie ever, just to break even on its expensive budget.
Initial reports have stated that Avatar 2 cost a whopping $350 million to make, which puts it as #4 on the most expensive movies ever made list. Cameron has stated that the sequel will need to exceed expectations if the franchise is set to continue. Currently, the third movie in the franchise is 95% done, which means it will be released no matter what happens.
However, James Cameron has also stated he is currently working on the sixth and seventh sequels for Avatar already, despite not knowing how the box office numbers are going to go. He might have to do some reshoots for Avatar 3 if that is going to end the franchise. Avatar 2 has made $555 million in worldwide box office numbers though, which is certainly nothing to scoff at.
Avatar 2 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish are both in theaters right now. While we would imagine that the former is going to make more at the box office, it is still getting beat in review recognition, which would spell trouble for a movie trying to become the fourth highest-grossing feature ever released.
Just remember, Avatar 2 has a staggering 3-hour and 12-minute runtime, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is nearly half that with 1 hour and 42 minutes. We are not trying to sway you either way, but you should know you must dedicate at least a good portion of your day to Pandora.
