The Fraggle Rock Reboot’s Fate Has Been Decided
Fraggle Rock came back in full force back in January of this year, as the once beloved 1980s children’s show was given the reboot treatment, which debuted on AppleTV+. Now, the reboot has been given new life, as it has been renewed for a second season on the streamer. The Fraggle Rock reboot is also going to be bringing in some heavy-hitting actors to take on guest spots in the new season.
Joining the second season of the Fraggle Rock reboot in guest spots are Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso, Thor: Love and Thunder), Ariana DeBose (Schmigadoon!), and Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Beetlejuice, Home Alone). The reboot also released a holiday special called Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Night of the Lights, which starred Daveed Diggs and was released on November 18. We are not sure when the next season will come out, but it is currently in production in Calgary, Canada.
The new season of the Fraggle Rock reboot will see the Rock, the Fraggles, Doozers, and Gorgs have to make big changes, as they come face to face with the challenges of being independent while confronting their own past. Naturally, this will be done with plenty of new songs that showcase the silliness of the show. We know that Diggs has plenty of singing in his resume, but we don’t know if O’Hara is going to get in on singing a new tune on the show.
The first season of the Fraggle Rock reboot contained 13 episodes, including the holiday special, so we expect the second season to likely be around the same episode count. Considering that production has already begun for the new season, we might be seeing it release in the fall of next year, meaning there could be another holiday special in the works. Granted, it does usually take more than a year for a show to release its new season, but we can be hopeful the reboot will come out at the end of 2023.
Still, for a show that was initially released in the 1980s to have the same level of success some 40 years later, it is a testament to how enjoyable Fraggle Rock has been, even as a reboot. The original series was produced by the beloved Jim Henson, and now is still being executive produced by The Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. The Jim Henson company still being involved with the series might be the reason why it has been so successful.
Considering that The Muppets has been in limbo for a while now, it appears that there is a greater need for a puppet show to entertain droves of children across the world. The Fraggle Rock reboot is clearly taking over that space, as the new series has been successful enough to warrant a new season and bring in a ton of great actors to appear in guest spots. Should The Muppets finally return to Disney+, we would imagine there could be a puppet and streaming war happening, though it might not be as intense as we are making it sound.
