Giancarlo Esposito Reveals What The Mandalorian Season 3 Will Be Like
Giancarlo Esposito has revealed during an exclusive interview with Collider that the highly anticipated third season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian is going to be “Off the chain.” The Breaking Bad actor described his experience working on the third season of the Star Wars spinoff show, which is set to air on March 1, 2023, stating “I love the mythology that goes behind this show that’s incorporated into the visuals that seem to be filmic. And I love the fact that you’re able to see, with each episode this season, you’re really turning on a new movie. Visually, it’s a sight and sound extravaganza.”
Giancarlo Esposito is no stranger to building hype while maintaining tight-lipped on details. Before he ventured into a galaxy far far away in The Mandalorian he famously portrayed drug kingpin and respected businessman Gustavo Fring in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, which followed the seedy underbelly of the Albuquerque, New Mexico drug cartel activity.
Esposito displayed his versatile knack for playing well-dressed and ice-cold antagonists by portraying similarly ruthless villains in Amazon’s The Boys as well as, of course, The Mandalorian. Carrying the prime antagonistic forces of three separate enormous franchises on his back sounds like too much for one man to handle, but Esposito makes it look easy, while also doing so for Far Cry 6, just as a victory lap.
The Mandalorian‘s third season already looks to be ratcheting up the tension, with a recent trailer displaying a return to planet Mandalore, as well as a reunion between Pedro Pascal’s Mando and Emily Swallow’s Armorer, alongside fan favorite ‘baby Yoda’ Grogu. Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon is set to return in the show’s third season as well, likely wreaking havoc on our heroes’ ongoing journey.
The sneak peek goes on to reveal returning performances from Carl Weathers, Paul Sun-Huyng Lee, Omid Abtahi, and Amy Sedaris. Famed Back to the Future actor Christopher Lloyd is also joining the series in an undisclosed role, bringing even more iconic film star power to the legendary flagship series.
Giancarlo Esposito went on to praise The Mandalorian season 3 for its incredible use of storytelling, describing the massive world-building within the narrative as groundbreaking and describing how storytelling at this level can truly make the world a better place. The third season is set to tie up several ongoing loose ends from the previous two seasons while incorporating storylines from spinoffs within the MandoVerse such as The Book Of Boba Fett.
However, have no fear that these closing loops signify finality for the hit program, as a fourth season has already been greenlit by Disney+. This should come as a pleasant sigh of relief to fans of the IP, after some restructuring behind the scenes led to another Mandoverse spinoff Rangers of the New Republic being canceled entirely.
For now, we’ll just have to wait a few more months to catch Giancarlo Esposito in action for The Mandalorian‘s third season, but the hype has become overwhelming, especially as we approach the holiday season, as series creator and director Jon Favreau has likened each new episode of The Mandalorian to opening a fresh gift on Christmas morning.
