Netflix’s Best Show Finally Gets A Second Season Update And New Images
Shadow and Bone premiered on Netflix in April 2021, with the first season consisting of eight episodes, and after receiving positive reception and being watched by 55 million households in its first 28 days of availability, the streamer renewed the show shortly after. Although filming on the next installment of the fantasy series began in January this year and wrapped in June, updates for Shadow and Bone Season 2 have been few and far between until recently. According to Deadline, the show will return on March 16, 2023.
Along with announcing the premiere date of Shadow and Bone Season 2, Netflix has released a slew of new first-look images, which you can see below, from the forthcoming installment. In addition, the streamer shared notes to fans about the new season from writers, executive producers, and showrunners Eric Heisserer (Bird Box) and Daegan Frykling. Author and executive producer Leigh Bardugo also provided details for the upcoming season, where she ensured that those who have read her book series will be “surprised” by what’s in store.
Bardugo revealed that she was able to step back a bit during the development of Shadow and Bone Season 2, giving the show’s writers more control. In addition to being “exciting,” the new season will introduce several new characters. She also disclosed how refreshing it was to be “surprised by [her] own stories.”
Meanwhile, Heisserer, who serves as one of the showrunners for Shadow and Bone Season 2, shared his excitement for advancing the characters’ stories in Season 2. In addition to dealing with the repercussions of their actions in the previous installment, they get to interact with fresh faces as they journey to new locations. He also said the new season “expands” on the mythology of Bardugo’s book series.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 will see Alina Starkov on the run, but she’s intent on bringing down the Shadow Fold and saving the nation of Ravka from ruin. Unfortunately, General Kirigan has resurfaced to finish what he started, and because he’s protected by an army of indestructible monsters and terrifying fresh Grisha recruits, he’s more dangerous than ever. To stand a fighting chance against him, Alina and Mal rally their own powerful allies and journey across continents in hopes of finding two mythical creatures that will amplify Alina’s powers.
Like the first installment, Shadow and Bone Season 2 will consist of eight hour-long episodes. The fantasy series was developed by Eric Heisserer, who served as showrunner for the first season. Daegan Fryklind was brought on as a new co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the second installment.
The new season of Shadow and Bone Season 2 is set to premiere on March 16, 2023. The show will bring back Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Ben Barnes as The Darkling/General Kirigan, Archie Renaux as Mal Oretsev, Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Kit Young as Jesper Fahey, Danielle Galligan as Nina Zenik, Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar, and Daisy Head as Genya Safin. Season 2 will also introduce long-awaited characters like Wylan Hendriks played by Jack Wolfe, Tolya Yul-Bataar played by Lewis Tan, Nikolai Lantsov played by Patrick Gibson, and Tamar Kir-Bataar played by Anna Leong Brophy.
