Margot Robbie Really Wants Harley Quinn To Make A Big Change
Margot Robbie has apparently been pushing behind the scenes to make a Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy romance happen. The Oscar nominated Suicide Squad star sat down recently with Comic Book .com to discuss her future with Harley Quinn and the DC universe, wherein she confirmed her desire to make the famed comic book romance happen on the big screen. When asked about the possibility of the two famous Gotham criminals finally hooking up, Robbie stated “I have been pushing for that for years. I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too!”
Margot Robbie first donned the iconic dual colored pigtails back in 2016 for her portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, before reprising the role in Birds Of Prey and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, making her performance the definitive live action Harley of our time. News broke recently that pop star turned actor Lady Gaga was going to be taking up the mantle in the upcoming Todd Phillips directed Joker sequel, alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. Margot Robbie has been endlessly supportive of this new iteration of the character, expressing her desire for Harley Quinn to exist within the popular zeitgeist as a character to be portrayed and passed down from actor to actor, just as Batman and MacBeth have been throughout the history of film and stage productions.
This casting news led to confusion among fans, however, questioning whether Margot Robbie would be officially stepping away from Harley Quinn, or continue to play the villainous madwoman in other DC films. At this time, it’s all up in the air, but the canon of Joker does seem to deviate from the existing canon of films such as Robert Pattinson’s Batman and The Suicide Squad, so it is entirely possible that multiple movie Harley’s could coexist. Margot Robbie has expressed interest in playing the role yet again, and explained that she has been pushing to bring the famed comic romance with Poison Ivy to the DCU.
When asked if she had any particular casting in mind for the Harley Quinn bestie turned love interest, Margot Robbie maintained that she hadn’t pictured any particular actor occupying the role yet, but stressed that she’d like the pairing to remain comic book accurate. James Gunn has expressed in the past that he is a fan of both the character and Robbie’s portrayal, so it seems especially likely that we may see the anti-hero return given Gunn’s new position as a creative director for the ever expanding DC film universe.
The Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy romance plot line has been a fan favorite dating back to 2015, and can be seen playing out in the animated Harley Quinn series on HBO Max which stars The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco in the titular role. Given the popularity of both characters and their iconic pairing, combined with Margot Robbie’s behind the scenes pushing of the popular arc, it would be fair to speculate that the couple will hit the big screen some time in the near future.
