Keanu Reeves Wants John Wick To Crossover With The Craziest Franchise
Always the open-minded guy, Keanu Reeves is apparently open to the possibility of John Wick crossing over with another franchise. Asked recently about which outside franchise he would choose to match with his assassin, Reeves didn’t pick Marvel, DC, Godzilla, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, or even a team up with Bruce Campbell’s Ash. No, the iconic star of The Matrix wants John Wick to meet Tyler Perry’s Madea.
As you can see and hear for yourself in the clip above, while talking to the Brazilian outlet CinePOP, Keanu Reeves named Tyler Perry‘s ornery creation as his crossover of choice.
“Me and my girlfriend thought it would be cool to have a crossover between John Wick and Madea,” Keanu Reeves told CinePOP, much to his interviewer’s delight. “Madea and John Wick! It would be insane, right?”
Speaking to NPR in 2012, Tyler Perry called Madea a “PG version” of both his mother and his aunt. “She would beat the hell out of you but make sure the ambulance got there in time to make sure they could set your arm back,” Perry said of his creation. If Keanu Reeves ever succeeds in getting Madea in a John Wick film (or the other way around), it would be the character’s 13th live-action big screen appearance since her 2005 debut in Diary of a Mad Black Woman; her 14th overall if you count 2015 animated movie Madea’s Tough Love
While no one should start holding their breath for John Wick: Chapter 5 – Madea Goes to the Continental (though would it perhaps be Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to the Continental, or Tyler Perry’s John Wick: Chapter 5 – Madea Goes to the Continental, or… never mind), we could imagine some tongue-in-cheek scenarios that would find Keanu Reeves’ John Wick and Tyler Perry’s Madea crossing paths.
After all, while we doubt that Madea–like Keanu Reeves’ John Wick–has anything to do with The High Table, it isn’t like she has a spotless record. Throughout the street-smart grandma’s film career we’ve heard a long list of charges that have been brought against her–usually related to her driving–including actually getting sent to the slammer in 2009’s Madea Goes to Jail.
Of course, hypothetically if Keanu Reeves and girlfriend Alexandra Grant got their John Wick crossover wish, would the assassin be working with or against Madea? Would the grandma be Wick’s target or a helpful contact? Maybe like Anjelica Huston’s The Director–who first appeared in 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum–who trains assassins that double as professional dancers, we would learn Madea is secretly an assassin who hides her crimes through really bad driving.
Whether or not any kind of franchise crossover is in the cards for Keanu Reeves’ vengeful button man, he’ll be reprising the role in John Wick: Chapter 4 on March 24, 2023. He’s also confirmed to appear in the first spinoff film, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as one of The Director’s dancing killers.
