See Harrison Ford’s Epic Return In Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny First Look
Nostalgia is a valuable commodity in Hollywood; there are dozens of examples of the industry cashing in on the emotion, like Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Top Gun: Maverick this year. Next year looks to be staying with the same trend with more Disney live-action remakes and one ultimate nostalgia project, Harrison Ford’s return in the fedora for Indiana Jones 5. The excitement got a new life with the release of the first trailer for the film, along with the confirmation of the title, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
In the way that this film is likely to lean heavily on the nostalgia of the fans, reminiscing about the past four adventures (maybe less the fourth) and comparing them, the trailer begins with that in mind by having Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), the last remaining star of the original adventurers from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Sallah begins with what could possibly be a plug on the failures and successes of the previous films by saying he misses the desert; the two most successful films, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, took place in the desert while Temple of Doom and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took place in the jungle. Once Harrison Ford tells him that those days are in the past, he argues perhaps not, kicking off Indiana Jones 5.
The next segment hears the lead actor narrate his disbelief in magic; as an academic college professor, he undoubtedly is too grounded for that kind of thing but reveals that it never matters what someone believes in when they allow their belief to rule their actions. Whether it be the Nazis turning over everything in their wake to chase after biblical power, a cultish leader throwing regions into poverty by stealing sacred stones, or the Russians kidnapping friends to acquire otherworldly power, he has seen his share of zealots chasing down belief. Harrison Ford seems primed to do so again in Indiana Jones 5.
The trailer does a great job of showcasing the talent the filmmakers acquired to surround their star as Pheobe Waller-Bridge gets her first good look by cracking a joke about him being her Godfather (unsure if it is a joke or if it is accurate). The trailer also showcases Mads Mikkelsen as the former Nazi in search of some powerful talisman that could possibly return them to power. Finally, we get a look at Antonio Banderas (albeit quickly, looking disheveled and motivated for something, whether revenge or adventure); Harrison Ford has plenty of competition on screen for his final run in Indiana Jones 5.
The score may be the most compelling thing about the trailer, other than a quick look at Harrison Ford’s de-aging. While it has been largely untouched since the 1981 debut in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, the trailer ends with an updated version that is sure to be divisive. If you’re a long-running Indy fan or Harrison Ford fan, be ready for the goosebumps when you watch the trailer for Indiana Jones 5.
