Return To The Formans’ Basement In That ’90s Show Trailer

It’s finally here! Today, Netflix graced us with an early Christmas present by releasing the first trailer for their upcoming That ‘70s Show reboot, That ‘90s Show. Adding to the cheer, they’ve even unveiled the release date for extra measure. The clip, which you can see above, is our first real look into the new story going down in the Forman’s basement in Point Place, Wisconsin.
Pulling into the streamer on January 19, the That ‘90s Show teaser opens on what else but the Vista Cruiser that got the original gang from point A to point B and into a lot of trouble. A new cast of teenagers is introduced as Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna’s (Laura Prepon) daughter Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) takes the basement by storm during her summer stay at her grandparent’s house. Speaking of the grandparents, Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) and Red (Kurtwood Smith) are looking amazing and not a day older than when the original series called it quits back in 2006. Red is also back in his prime, already threatening to put his food in someone’s a**.
One thing missing from the newly released That ‘90s Show trailer is any glimpse of the original cast outside of Rupp and Smith. The entire gang is set to be making appearances throughout the production with Wilmer Valderrama, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace, and Laura Prepon each reprising their roles along with other fan favorites such as Tommy Chong. The only cast member not coming back to the sequel will be Danny Masterson, who’s currently standing on trial for allegations of sexual assault.
As for the rest of the crew, their absence from the trailer is driving home the idea that Netflix is hoping to craft a new story, drawing audiences in with a younger generation and not relying so heavily on their sure-fire favorites. And while we’re disappointed to not catch even a peek at Eric, Donna, Fez, Jackie, or Kelso, the folks behind That ‘90s Show have always said that the characters would just be making appearances and never holding down long-running storylines. However, with the promise of special guests, along with the plot involving Kitty and Red, Netflix has seemingly crafted a solid follow-up that will perfectly blend the old with the new.
That ‘90s Show takes audiences to the summer of 1995 when Leia Forman (Haverda) goes on a summer vacation to the home of her grandparents in Point Place, Wisconsin. Other new-to-the-franchise stars will include Ashley Aufderheide, Mace Coronel, Maxwell Acee Donovan, Reyn Doi, and Sam Morelos, each one playing local Point Place teens who befriend Leia during her summer stay. Bonnie and Terry Turner, the original brains behind That ‘70s Show and other 1990s favorites 3rd Rock from the Sun, created the sequel series alongside Gregg Mettler and Lindsay Turner.
While for many fans (me!) who’ve been waiting for what feels like an eternity to get to this spot, it’s shockingly only been a year since the show was first announced. Despite the challenge of getting most of the main cast to return to the series, somehow everything managed to pull through, leading us to this momentous day. You can catch the trailer for That ‘90s Show above, and binge old episodes of That ‘70s Show on Peacock before the new series hits Netflix on January 19.
