Jeri Ryan Getting Her Own Star Trek Spinoff Series?
Jeri Ryan could get her own Star Trek spinoff series, but only if the fans want it bad enough. That’s the word from Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas. In a recent interview, the producer said that if Trekkies want Seven of Nine in her own series, they need to start getting busy letting Paramount know.
Matalas was talking to Den of Geek about the upcoming third and final season of Star Trek: Picard–which will see Jeri Ryan once again reprise her signature role–when he was asked about the possibility of Seven getting her own spinoff with Michelle Hurd co-starring as Seven’s partner Raffi. “I would love nothing more,” Matalas answered. “Please send your letters to Paramount+ and [Alex Kurtzman’s production company] Secret Hideout.”
Michelle Hurd’s Raffi was introduced in Season 1 of Picard as a friend of Patrick Stewart’s character who served under him in the years between 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis and Picard, but who had since fallen on hard times. Jeri Ryan landed a recurring role as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard‘s first season, and in the final moments of the season finale it becomes clear that things between Seven and Raffi had taken a romantic turn. Their relationship continues in Season 2, when Ryan was promoted to a series regular, though the couple has a lot of tough issues to work through.
The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard begins streaming February 16, and as of yet we don’t know whether or not Jeri Ryan’s hero is still with Michelle Hurd’s. A teaser for Season 3 was released a few months, revealing Seven of Nine taking over command of the U.S.S. Titan– Will Riker’s (Jonathan Frakes) former command–with Raffi nowhere in sight. Meanwhile Raffi’s only appearances in the most recent trailer (via YouTube) shows her in an urban setting and seeming to be in hiding.
A Jeri Ryan led Star Trek spinoff may very well be the only way we could see the character’s continuing adventures after the events of Picard‘s final season. There continues to be lots of discussion from Kate Mulgrew and other former stars of Star Trek: Voyager about a Picard-like revival series, but if/when it happens Ryan’s involvement wouldn’t necessarily be a guarantee.
Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan had something of an epic feud during the making of Star Trek: Voyager. While Mulgrew has since admitted she was in the wrong and plenty of fences seem to have been mended, it isn’t clear whether or not Ryan would want to rejoin the cast considering what she endured. Among other things, Mulgrew infamously tried to institute a rule that Ryan wasn’t allowed to take bathroom breaks because of how long it took for her to get in and out of costume.
