Neve Campbell’s New Series Is In Trouble

Neve Campbell may have cut our hearts out when she announced that she wouldn’t be returning for Scream 6, but for those of us who’ve been excited to see her in the upcoming crime drama, Avalon, it’s a double punch to the gut, as ABC has decided to can the production. Deadline recently revealed the network’s decision to no longer move forward with the drama even though it was greenlit with a straight-to-series order almost a year ago in February 2021. The only good news for the show is that it may have a chance to shine elsewhere, as its home studio of A+E Networks has announced its intentions to continue shopping around for a new home.
A+E previously made this move with another Neve Campbell-led series The Lincoln Lawyer, which would eventually end up at Netflix, meaning there’s still hope for Avalon. As of right now, it’s unclear what other networks are prospective buyers, but with Campbell’s name attached, we’re sure more than one other platform will throw their names into the ring. It’s worth noting that situations like this one don’t happen often, with most series moving forward following their greenlight, leading to speculation surrounding the reception of the project’s pilot episode.
Neve Campbell plays Detective Nicole “Nic” Searcy in Avalon, a crime-based series that takes place in the titular city on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. A tiny city with a small population and boatloads of daily tourists, L.A.P.D. Detective Searcy finds herself at the center of a huge mystery that’s made landfall on the island. A cop serious about her job to keep those around her safe, Detective Searcy may not have previously found her position to be a gateway to glory, but she’ll soon discover that she’s just the officer needed to bring the person – or persons – to justice.
We love Neve Campbell in anything, and over the years, she’s proven to have a huge performance range, but boy do we love seeing her in the action that a project like Avalon would provide. While many of us ‘90s kids know her as a big-screen mainstay from iconic films like The Craft, Wild Things, and the Scream franchise, in recent years, Campbell has taken her talents to series form. Following an uber-successful run on the hit political drama House of Cards, she nabbed a starring role in the aforementioned movie-turned-Netflix-show, The Lincoln Lawyer, which was granted a second season order in late June.
Sticking to her action-packed roots, she’s also signed on to appear opposite Marvel star Anthony Mackie in the Peacock series version of the video-game franchise, Twisted Metal. Maybe her time with the Avengers star will get us one step closer to seeing Neve Campbell step out of dramas like Avalon and The Lincoln Lawyer and into the world of superheroes. We can dream, can’t we?
Even with the recent news that Neve Campbell’s Avalon won’t be moving forward at ABC, fans still have plenty to look forward to when it comes to what’s possible for the star’s career in the upcoming years. With Scream 5 slashing box office numbers and bringing longtime (and new) fans of the franchise back to theaters, it’s entirely possible that Campbell would appear in a Scream 7 should we be so blessed as to receive it. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for the future of Avalon.
