With James Gunn recently appointed as the new co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios (alongside Peter Safran), fans are expected to see a lot more comic book characters appear in the DC Extended Universe as Gunn has been petitioning fans to gauge who they would like to see on screen. Apparently, this is not the case for Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is also headed by Gunn. After a Twitter user reported that a surprise character would make an appearance in the upcoming special, Gunn was quick to deny the rumor.
First reactions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first-ever holiday special are starting to leak on the internet, with most reviews being pretty positive. One Twitter user praised the film, saying that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special would become a new annual tradition for them. They also added a hint for Marvel fans to stay tuned for the after-credits scene where the Marvel comic book character Silver Surfer would make a surprise appearance.
Gunn, who wrote and directed the Guardians of the Galaxy special, quickly denied the trending rumors that Silver Surfer would make an appearance, replying to the tweet with a single word: “False.”
The Twitter user has since admitted that they made up the rumor in an attempt to go viral with their fake news. They did not disclose if they actually saw the special, which does not release on Disney+ until November 25.
Marvel fans have anxiously been awaiting the Silver Surfer’s debut in the MCU with no confirmation of when it might happen. The Silver Surfer, aka Norrin Radd, has not appeared in a live-action feature since the sequel to 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four, 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. 20th Century Fox maintained Silver Surfer’s rights until Disney merged with the studio in 2019.
Since then, there have been many guesses as to when the villain-turned-superhero comic book character would make an appearance in the MCU, including suggestions that it might happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While Gunn has shut down the claim that the Silver Surfer would appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy special, he has not debunked the possibility of the character appearing in the third Guardians movie.
The Guardians of the Galaxy special is the MCU’s first-ever attempt at a Christmas-time movie. The film was written and directed by Gunn and features all our favorite Guardians characters, as well as a few new faces. The film focuses on Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) as they attempt to kidnap Kevin Bacon (playing himself) to cheer up Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).
In addition to Bautista, Klementieff, and Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Sean Gunn will all be returning in their original Guardians roles. The film takes place between where we last saw the Guardians team at the end of Avengers: Endgame and in Thor: Love and Thunder and their next appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
