Catherine O’Hara is returning as Delia in Beetlejuice 2. Revealed by The Direct, O’Hara joins her original Beetlejuice co-stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder in the upcoming sequel. While there is no current release date, or even a date for the start of production, bringing on board the Home Alone star is a major step in the right direction for the slowly developing project.

Creator and director of the first movie, Tim Burton, has long been attempting to bring the bizarre ghoul back to movie screens. Catherine O’Hara signing on for Beetlejuice 2 is the first sign of life for the project in months. The star has expressed interest in reprising her role for years, whenever a fan or reporter has asked, O’Hara’s response has always been positive.

Beetlejuice was first unleashed upon movie theaters in 1988 and immediately made an impact with its bizarre fantasy horror comedy mashup plot. Michael Keaton played the titular Beetlejuice, a bio-exorcist tasked by ghosts to scare the Deetz family out of their new home. Catherine O’Hara’s character in Beetlejuice 2, Delia Deetz, finished the first movie making peace with the ghosts haunting the home, which is likely where the new movie’s plot will pick up.

Fan demand for a sequel has been building for over 30 years, with a Beetlejuice musical becoming a hit on Broadway after it debuted in 2018. A video game adaptation for the NES and a Saturday morning cartoon focused on Winona Ryder’s character of Lydia, represent the only official continuations of Tim Burton’s gothic horror franchise. Catherine O’Hara’s return for Beetlejuice 2 is a fan-favorite move likely to satisfy at least one fan demand for the upcoming sequel.

Catherine O’Hara’s impending Beetlejuice 2 return is not the first time the actress has done a sequel to a hit film. One of the actress’ most prominent roles post-Beetlejuice was as Kate, the mother of Macaulay Culkin‘s character in both Home Alone and the follow-up Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Her character’s sudden realization of leaving her son behind, resulting in a sudden scream of “Kevin!” became an internet meme.

The Canadian-American star is also no stranger to comedy, having spent 5 years as Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek, following a long career as an improv comic with the famous Second City troupe out of Toronto. At one point, she was the understudy for future Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radnor. Catherine O’Hara in Beetlejuice 2 will likely continue to add to the star’s comedic resume, which also includes a long run as a principal performer on the Canadian sketch show, SCTV.

With no set date for production to even begin, Catherine O’Hara’s return in Beetlejuice 2 could still take a few years. Tim Burton is currently working on the Netflix series Wednesday, while Winona Ryder is involved in the upcoming Season 5 of Stranger Things. While the stars of the original are on board, scheduling conflicts and the horrifying realities of Hollywood production times represent the scariest obstacles yet for the Ghost with the Most to make a grand return.
