Daredevil Star Shares Their Favorite Charlie Cox Memory
Deborah Ann Woll, who played Karen Page in Daredevil, recalls one of her most memorable scenes with star Charlie Cox.
While we patiently await the arrival of the Disney+ and Marvel series, Daredevil, which will bring the story of super-powered attorney Matt Murdock back to screens everywhere, original Netflix series star Deborah Ann Woll has shared her favorite memory from the sets of Netflix’s production. In a recent interview on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, which you can see above, the actress who played Karen Page on Netflix’s Daredevil revealed that a touching and teamwork-driven moment between her and Charlie Cox in a scene during the show’s third season. Although she says that “every scene with (Charlie Cox) was a joy,” it was a creative exchange between the duo that’s stuck in Woll’s memory all these years later.
Explaining what led to the collaborative moment, Deborah Ann Woll says that the two poured their thoughts and knowledge into a script that would lead to a flashback scene, after Matt Murdoch’s big reveal to his love interest Karen Page (Woll) that he was the titular superhero. Woll says that Daredevil showrunner Erik Olsen gave her and Charlie Cox his first “pass” on the script, with the actors then making adjustments as they saw fit. She says that the two “read through it and discussed it” before passing it back to the production team to make their final edits.
When that day of Daredevil filming rolled around, Deborah Ann Woll says that “it just was another one of those moments with (Charlie Cox) where I was like, ‘I’m just so grateful this is you, and not some a-hole who’s too big for his britches.’” For anyone who’s enjoyed the series, you’ll remember that the chemistry between Cox’s Murdoch and Woll’s Page was incredibly believable. And now we know why as it’s clear that both felt safe and heard in one another’s company, with each given the leeway to craft the series in a way that would ring true to their characters.
Netflix’s rollout of the Marvel comic book-based stories would see not only Daredevil led by Charlie Cox, but also the Krysten Ritter-starring Jessica Jones, the Mike Colter-led Luke Cage, the Finn Jones-starring Iron Fist and John Bernthal as The Punisher. The titular heroes in the first four shows would also band together to bring audiences The Defenders miniseries. Ahead of its time when it came to what was possible for heroes on the small screen, the shows unfortunately lost steam, and each faced cancellation.
With Disney+ and Marvel’s new roll-out, which aims to breathe new life into old projects over the next several years and give them the revamps that they deserve, many fans are looking forward to seeing what the studios do with the continuation of Daredevil. In the series, Charlie Cox stars as the titular hero Matt Murdock, who comes to blows with villains and lowlifes threatening the safety and decency of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. Arguably one of Marvel’s most iconic and beloved heroes, the story of Daredevil was previously told in the 2003 Ben Affleck-led feature, also titled Daredevil. The first episode of Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again is slated to land in the Spring of 2024.
