The Chronicles of Narnia is officially about to be rebooted, much like many properties, but now the new series of movies might have found its director. The reboot has taken a massive step forward as popular director Greta Gerwig is being tapped to direct two of the three upcoming movies from Netflix. The streaming giant nabbed the rights to the book series back in 2018, and seemingly now has a director in place for the first two.
Greta Gerwig is all the rage currently, as she was instantly put on the map when she wrote Lady Bird and Little Women. Both movies would see Gerwig nominated for Oscars, and she has since exploded in Hollywood. She is also directing the Margot Robbie-led Barbie movie, which is going to vastly different than rebooting the Chronicles of Narnia.
Still, this is a huge deal for Gerwig, as the Chronicles of Narnia are some of the most beloved stories in the world. The C.S. Lewis books have been adapted before, as the books were turned into live-action features back in 2005, 2008, and 2010. However, there have been no attempts to reboot them again, until now. What makes this far more interesting is the amount of money that Netflix is likely going to have to sink into these movies to get them to be as awe-striking as the previously mentioned adaptations were.
Greta Gerwig signing on to direct the first two Chronicles of Narnia is fantastic news, as she now joins the team alongside Coco co-writer, Matt Aldrich. Both Aldrich and Gerwig are fantastic writers, and they can surely band together to make this adaptation even more successful than the early 2000s movies were. The original adaptation trilogy pulled in a staggering $1.5 billion in worldwide box office numbers.
We are not sure how Netflix would match those numbers being that it’s a streaming platform, but the number of times that this new Chronicles of Narnia is watched would be the equivalent of the money made in theaters. At least, that is what we presume. Still, Gerwig is a fantastic creator and one that can truly bring back the magic of these wonderful stories.
The Chronicles of Narnia novel series has been adapted many times, but only the first three novels. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe are one of the most adapted. Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader are among the adaptations as well. This leaves an additional four novels that could be part of Netflix’s grander plan for this new reboot.
However, Greta Gerwig is only going to be directing the first two movies, which we can assume are The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. Netflix is likely to decide if The Silver Chair, The Horse and his Boy, The Magician’s Nephew, and The Last Battle are worth the adaptations, once the numbers for the first two movies are released in the future. Still, it is quite exciting that this reboot has landed such a prestigious director.
