Godzilla Vs. Kong Sequel Headed For Disaster With Terrible Title?
Godzilla vs. Kong is finally getting a sequel, called Gozilla and Kong.
Godzilla vs. Kong is getting a sequel, and we finally have a title for the next installment in the kaiju catastrophe franchise. The production crew (compiled here on MovieWeb) posted pictures including hats and shirts that were given as wrap gifts, confirming the new film would be titled Godzilla and Kong, leaving the idea that this underwhelming title could sink the anticipated sequel. However, whereas the previous adventure saw the King of the Monsters and the protector of Skull Island going head to head (mostly), this film will see them work together to explore the power of friendship.
Okay, maybe the pair didn’t establish a friendship, necessarily. Though Godzilla vs. Kong ended with Godzilla knocking Kong out after they teamed up to fight Mecha-Godzilla, the King of the Monsters was merciful and let Kong walk away out of respect. After showing the Skull Island resident to know his place in the food chain, of course. So, what could end up bringing the two back together as allies?
With the film originally titled Godzilla vs. Kong: Origins, it’s safe to say we’ll get some background on the two’s previous run-ins as well as a new adversary to team up against. While there are plenty of monsters from the history of both kaiju that could pose a big enough threat, it’s unclear as to yet who it could be. With speculation from fans ranging from serious answers like Destroya or another classic Godzilla villain like Hedorah, the guesses on Kong’s side are trending towards more ridiculous theories, like the ape’s classic enemy… Frankenstein? No way they would try to top a cinema classic like King Kong vs. Frankenstein though.
With news of the title of the sequel has also come confirmation of returning cast and characters, including series mainstays like Brian Tyree Henry, Rebecca Hall, and new addition Dan Stevens of Legion and The Guest, also made by returning Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard. The film is scheduled to release in March of 2024, just in time for Godzilla’s 70th birthday. As always with a milestone like this, the creators and fans of Godzilla will be celebrating in a big way.
Though Legendary’s Godzilla has been keeping a consistent screen presence since his debut in 2014, original production company Toho hasn’t had a new sighting of Tokyo’s most famous resident since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. Whereas Godzilla vs. Kong depicted the more protective nature of the Big G, Hideaki Anno (the insane genius behind Neon Genesis Evangelion) returns to the series horror roots, playing on the fear of the still-fresh Fukushima Nuclear disaster nearly a decade ago.
Toho promises to remedy this though, with a recent tease for a new Godzilla movie of their own. Though nothing has been confirmed as to its place in Godzilla lore or if it will be a completely new take. While Godzilla vs. Kong performed well worldwide, there’s just something about the love and respect his home country holds that keeps fans coming back to Toho’s Godzilla offerings. Exciting A- Godzilla: Final Wars, where the studio’s own Godzilla hilariously destroyed the 1998 American take in less than ten seconds.
In addition, a new series is in the works from Kurt and Wyatt Russell in conjunction with AppleTV+. With 2022 coming to an end and the 70th anniversary of Godzilla only a year away, fans can expect even more Godzilla vs. Kong-related destruction in the coming year. Hopefully, the title is the only boring aspect of this new Monsterverse sequel.
