Zack Snyder exploded onto the scene in the mid-2010s with his architectural designs for the DC Extended Universe that began with Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as the Kryptonian for the first time. His plan was interrupted by a string of films that were not well-received, including the introduction of both Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice; and the much-maligned introduction of the titular team of villains in Suicide Squad. After the turmoil of Justice League, the controversy with Ray Fisher, and the saga of Ezra Miller, many questions still hang in the air for the future of the DCEU; according to an appearance on The Preston & Steve Show, Zack Snyder hasn’t received a call from Warner Bros. to move forward on a project.
During the merger between Warner Bros and Discovery, new CEO David Zaslow had a lot on his plate, not the least of which was trying to figure out what he was going to do with a franchise that was supposed to be competing with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and instead is virtually dead in the water. His first order of business was to shelve a ton of projects, kill others, and give any fan of the DCEU little to no hope that their franchise of characters was ever going to continue; then he hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to take it into the future and gave Henry Cavill a return to Superman in Black Adam. This doesn’t say that the franchise is returning by any means, and even with these two on board with an eight to ten-year plan mapped out, Zack Snyder told The Preston & Steve Show that he is off doing his own thing and has yet to receive a call from DC.
The “doing his own thing” he refers to is his newest project called Rebel Moon, a science-fiction epic following a young girl seeking out help from warriors around the galaxy to help her defend against the tyrants of her planet. The new project from Zack Snyder stars Sophia Boutella (Atomic Blonde and The Mummy), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs and Westworld), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch and The Hunger Games), and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride and Saw). Also notable is the presence of Ray Fisher, who was vocal in the studio’s treatment of him and the other actors on the set of Justice League.
While there is still a lot up in the air regarding what is happening with the DCEU, just because he has yet to receive a call says nothing definitive about their plans. Zack Snyder has a pretty vocal fan base, one that was loud enough to get the studio to dump an additional $20 million into the Snyder cut of Justice League and get a new version that the fans received much better than the original. That said, it isn’t far-fetched to think that Gunn and Safran are ready to take what worked from the Snyderverse (namely Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Margot Robbie) and leave the rest in the past.
