A Tell All Snoop Dogg Biopic Is Happening
Snoop Dogg is producing a biopic about himself, directed by Allen Hughes.
Biopics are the theme of the season as Snoop Dogg is the latest star to have a new film about his life in development, per Variety. The Los Angeles based rapper has just closed a deal to produce a biopic on himself, directed by film legend Allen Hughes (Menace II Society) and written by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever co-writer Joe Robert Cole.
Snoop Dogg, one of the most prolific rappers on earth, is no stranger to film, acting in multiple projects as both himself (Looney Tunes, Modern Family) as well as various dramatic and comedic muscles on occasion (Training Day, Half Baked). Snoop Dogg’s most recent venture has been a kids show called Doggyland, where he plays the character Bow Wizzle. On the other side of the entertainment spectrum, he was in the Netflix original film Dayshift starring Jamie Fox.
Donna Langley, who produced the 2015 feature Straight Outta Compton, will be overseeing the feature along with Snoop Dogg. Langley was hailed as essential in getting the gritty details of the NWA on film, and Snoop Dogg will be co-producing with his own Death Row Pictures, which he founded after acquiring the original Death Row Records, the famous label founded by Snoop’s mentor and NWA founder Dr. Dre, among others.
While nobody is confirmed as playing the legendary rapper yet, it won’t be the first time he’s been portrayed onscreen. Snoop Dogg was played in Straight Outta Compton by Atlanta and Sorry To Bother You breakout Lakeith Stanfield, though there has been no comment about Stanfield potentially reprising the role as of yet. Stanfield is set to star in the Haunted Mansion reboot for Disney.
No matter who ends up portraying Snoop Dogg, the film is in the capable hands of writer Joe Robert Cole. Cole, who co-wrote Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever alongside director Ryan Coogler, is set to pen the film with Alan Hughes, himself a celebrated director.
Though he first came to fame as a rapper, rising though the Compton scene under the tutelage of Dr. Dre and other prominent East Coast hip-hop acts of the time, Snoop Dogg hasn’t let himself be confined to one box. In the past years he’s done everything from film, music, and a surprisingly wholesome cooking show with another hardened former-criminal- Martha Stewart.
The most pressing question for most though- will the film have access to the entirety of Snoop Dogg’s recording history? According to the man himself, yes. With the film being produced in part by Death Row Pictures, Snoop’s own label, his songs are a definite inclusion. After the handling of Straight Outta Compton though, was that ever really in doubt?
While the film probably won’t be seen for a couple of years at least, fans of Snoop Doggy Dogg can be assured he’s staying busy. Recently Dogg announced an as of yet untitled mini-series with Peacock. He can also be seeing in Call of Duty: Vanguard, where he was added as a playable operator in what is still not the weirdest crossover in Call of Duty history.
