In a conversation with ET Canada, Jason Momoa of Aquaman fame teased that one of his “dreams come true” will be happening, under the watch of new DC Studios heads Peter Safran and James Gunn. Momoa said that with the new hands at the helm, there will be a lot of cool things coming up.
There’s no indication yet whether Jason Momoa’s dream project features him as Aquaman, or perhaps appearing as another DC character entirely. The news that the new Superman film with Henry Cavill will change details of the character’s origin seems to indicate that the new movies from DC will not be averse to making comic-book-style changes to continuity, so anything seems possible.
Momoa’s comments came in an interview about his new Netflix project, Slumberland, where he stars with Marlow Barkley in a movie based on the comic book series Little Nemo in Slumberland by author Winsor McCay. The forthcoming Netflix feature is set to debut on the platform on November 18th, 2022, and Jason Momoa will portray a half-man, half-monster named Flip, in a movie about a young girl discovering a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland. Flip and the girl team up in search of her late father. In addition to Momoa and Barkley, the movie star Kyle Chandler, Chris O’Dowd, India de Beaufort, Humberly González, and Weruche Opia.
Elsewhere, Jason Momoa has a passion project he’s developed as Executive Producer, with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett penning the script from a story by Momoa. The western The Last Manhunt was recently picked up by Saban Films and tells the true story of a young Native American man named Willie Boy who accidentally kills his girlfriend’s father. The predominantly Native American cast consists of Martin Sensmeier, Mainei Kinimaka, Zahn McClarnon, Lily Gladstone, Raoul Max Trujillo, Brandon Oakes, and Tantoo Cardinal. Christian Carmago directs the project.
Additionally, Momoa has been cast as a villain in Fast X, which stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Michael Rooker, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Helen Mirren, Cardi B, Daniela Melchior, Brie Larson, Alan Ritchson, and Rita Moreno. Louis Leterrier is on board to direct after Justin Lin left the project over creative differences. Lin remains on as a producer. Fast X is scheduled for a May 19, 2023 release date.
Jason Momoa’s next announced project for DC Studios will be Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, scheduled to debut in theaters for Christmas 2023. As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros announced that the releases of many of its big 2022 films, including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, had been delayed. The release date for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was first changed to March 17, 2023, but was then further pushed back to December 25, 2023.
And beyond that? Somewhere, out there, is Momoa’s “dream come true,” for which the star tells us to “Stay tuned.”
