A Canceled, Fan-Favorite Netflix Series Is Getting A Major Movie And Animated Show
Netflix's canceled series Fate: The Winx Saga isn't as dead as previously reported. While the series is still canceled, a movie and animated series are on the way.
If you’re a fan of Netflix’s canceled Fate: The Winx Saga, get ready for some better news than what you got earlier this week. As reported by Deadline, in a lengthy social media message the franchise’s creator Iginio Straffi explained that an animated reboot of Winx is going into production and that he’s working on getting a Winx movie. While the animated series seems to be a lock, considering it’s going into production, from what Straffi writes the Fate: The Winx Saga movie isn’t exactly a done deal. He writes he is “working hard hoping to bring you a top-quality movie,” which could mean he doesn’t yet have a studio backing the project.
He also doesn’t mention whether this movie will be a live-action continuation of Fate: The Winx Saga, or animated like the upcoming series or Nickelodeon’s Winx Club which marked the beginning of the franchise. Fans of the Netflix series will no doubt hope for the former possibility, considering the show was canceled after two seasons; forcing it to end on a cliffhanger.
Those fans were rightly shocked and confused at the news of Fate: The Winx Saga‘s cancellation. The fantasy teen drama had reached the #1 spot on Netflix’s series streaming charts in over 80 countries. Considering Straffi’s announcement, it’s a little too tempting to not speculate on what was behind the surprising cancellation.
With Straffi making an announcement about both an animated reboot and a movie so soon after Fate: The Winx Saga getting the axe suggests he’s been working on both for a while; in fact in his post he refers to the idea of making a Winx movie as his “long-time dream.” Again, this is only speculation, but what if this upcoming animated series and/or movie are already committed to a rival streaming service?
That might give Netflix more than enough motivation to cancel Fate: The Winx Saga; not in spite of its popularity, but because of it. The streamer might see Straffi as using their platform to promote spinoff projects that competitors would profit from. If this were the case then by canceling Fate, the streamer will likely temporarily stop Straffi from bringing the show somewhere else, just as Disney+ had to wait a number of years before it could legally stream series like Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
If this speculation were anywhere near the mark, then there’s even a good chance we could guess the destination for the Fate: The Winx Saga spinoffs. The show is produced by Archery Pictures in association with Rainbow, and Rainbow has two owners: Iginio Straffi and Paramount Global. Don’t be too shocked if you hear about the Winx animated reboot and/or the movie landing on Paramount+.
